How old were your kids when the started walking themselves to and from school? Or when they started going to the park unsupervised- park is a 5-10min walk. Thanks

Year 6 walking to and from school as school didn't allow it any younger.
Going to the local park age around 8/9 with a bunch of friends.

Depends on area for park. They happily went at 7&8 to the park, but then we moved and its only now at 9&10 they are restarting, manly the 10yo (yr6, nearly 11)
Walking to school... yr5, as allowed by school.

Our school allows from year 5 but we're on the edge of catchment and he'd have to cross a couple of busy roads ( plus I have to take his sister anyway) so 9 year old DC doesn't yet.

Year 5 but the school is literally just around the corner.

The park - probably 8 or 9, I can't remember and obviously we made it about the child themselves rather than a strict number. Some kids are more sensible/capable than their siblings at the same age.

Our junior school had a 'parent (or adult) must drop off and collect from playground' rule so kids were only allowed to walk once they started secondary (so around 11).
It's not so much walking to the park as being in the park unsupervised. I've been to parks so packed with kids that it was hard to keep track of mine and there was a lake nearby. Or if a kid hurts themselves or gets in to a fight with another or whatever.
But I think secondary age is a pretty good age that kids are mature enough to deal with stuff.

12, because there is high volume traffic here and school/park/shops are not nearby.

Year 6 for my ds....DD is now in year six and she hasn't walked to school alone yet or been anywhere alone. She is quite young for her age and has minor sn

How far are these parks? Ours is about a 15/20 minute walk which feels too far. I was thinking from year 5 I would start introducing but perhaps the summer term so for us I think 10yo.

redskyatnight · 02/05/2022 17:26

Playing out from the summer before Year 5 (age 9) - this was within about a half mile radius of home, which expanded as they got older.
Walking to school (actually cycling) from the start of Year 5 - just over a mile.

School was year 5 for my eldest with her year three sister. Loads of parents walking that way, both sensible and a full group of them used to walk together. Never any problems.
