How old before your dc made you a cuppa?

What's a safe age for them to handle boiling water? I'm thinking maturity and height are also factors. 🤔

About 7?

Honaloulou · 02/05/2022 07:43

Very much placemarking.

DD is 2 and desperate to help (obviously not happening).

There must be a sweet spot when they’re old enough to be safe, but young enough to want to show off to mummy. Maybe 7 ish?

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 02/05/2022 07:44

I was making tea from the age of 7. After I managed to knock the kettle over myself at the age of 10 and suffer a rather nasty burn, my dc were not allowed to touch the kettle until they were 11. I admit this is over cautious though.

Therealpink · 02/05/2022 07:45

My 7 yr old makes a perfect cup of tea for DH and I.

DustyTulips · 02/05/2022 07:45

We have a heavy kettle on a gas stove, so about 9 was when they were tall and strong enough to manage it at home. 7 with the light plastic kettle at granny’s house. Younger for the coffee machine, as that’s just button pressing 😀

Shlomping1234 · 02/05/2022 07:46

Mine was 9. He makes a lovely cuppa too 😊

Impatientwino · 02/05/2022 07:52

8 here

Fitterbyfifty · 02/05/2022 07:53

My Ds started at about 10 - a bit later than most but we have a gas hob that is tricky! My DD is 12 and claims not to be good at making tea so gets her brother to do it for me!

Petalpup · 02/05/2022 07:56

Mine was from the age of 8 but at nearly 10 he spilt a whole cup of boiling water on himself and scalded himself badly so hasn’t done so since.

AtomicBlondeRose · 02/05/2022 07:58

My 8yo loves to make me cups of tea. She would have done it earlier but did struggle with the weight of the kettle. Be warned the novelty wears off! But well worthwhile getting them trained up while you can.

AtomicBlondeRose · 02/05/2022 07:59

In fact I remember my DS being set “make a grown-up at home a cup of tea” as part of his home learning during lockdown 😂😂 He must have been in Y4 at the time so clearly school considered 8/9 an appropriate age.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 02/05/2022 08:00

Ahhh my husband and I day dream about our 1 year old taking us on a cup of tea some day 🤣

my husband reckons she can make him an nespresso in a year or so lolz 😂

perhaps training her to make a cocktail would be a bit safer bet seeing as no boiling water is involved

This is reassuring! My ds is the perfect age!

Lol I'd be a bit worried about the spirit measurements though!!

Mine were 8/9.
They stopped once they were teens.

reluctantbrit · 02/05/2022 08:11

DD was 8, doing it for a Brownie badge.

monicagellerbing · 02/05/2022 08:17

blublub · 02/05/2022 08:19

A responsible 8. Looking forward to the youngest reaching this age then they’re all trained 😂

Frazzled2207 · 02/05/2022 08:24

Oh I have an almost 9yo so will offer a lesson today

that said I think I’m subconsciously worried because at the age of 14 i scalded myself quite badly, still have the scars

SheWoreYellow · 02/05/2022 08:25

9 for my older two. Wouldn’t trust the younger one though.

TimBoothseyes · 02/05/2022 08:48

Around 7 or 8

jackstini · 02/05/2022 09:10

10/11with the kettle, but they used the coffee capsule machine from 8/9 - easier process and cooler water

WutheredOut · 02/05/2022 09:12

My DS is 8 and make a fabulous cup - and is always willing!

DD 10 always ‘accidentally’ puts too much milk in so I have stopped asking her

AtomicBlondeRose · 02/05/2022 09:13

Actually in my experience I find that the fear of the hot water makes them be very sensible with the kettle, so it’s the milk that’s the biggest issue as they slop it all over or are so cautious you get about one drop in there!

SheAndHerAreWomen · 02/05/2022 09:26

I would also say 7. My DDs were taught at Brownies so I thought it must be okay Grin
