Year 11 Prom DS, do people tend to buy or hire a suit?

Just curious?

We bought for ds. But we had a wedding to go to about 3 weeks later, and, as it turned out, a funeral too.
We bought fairly cheaply though as knew he was in a growth spurt.

What will he be doing for 6th form ?
Lots of schools round here insist on 'business wear' for 6th formers, so, if he doesn't have a growth spurt over the Summer, he can wear it to school.

Thanks @Kite22
His school allow casual clothes in 6th form.
I suspect the difference between hiring and buying won't be that much so will probably buy on the assumption he'll get some wear out of it.
I have read that shops put on special deals around prom time so probably wait until closer to the time.

We bought as found that the selection for hire wasn’t a great fit for ds. Everything was a regular cut and he needed a slim fit suit. I didn’t find any particular deals in shops around prom time and I’d probably go sooner rather than later for range of choice and sizes.

We hired, much more practical for us at the time, probably would have been outgrown by sixth form in the September.

Poppiesway1 · 02/05/2022 01:01

For ds1 we hired.. for ds2.. we’ve just had to buy him a suit for sixth form interviews as formal dress was specified so he picked one he really liked and he’s wearing that.. if not we would have hired again!

Flatandhappy · 02/05/2022 06:37

Bought for both DS, they were outgrown before they could be worn again 😐 I had always turned up my nose at hiring but was very impressed when DD hired a dress for a formal.

We hired for prom as he wanted a tuxedo. We bought his 6th form suits.

No idea, but do you really want to support such an awful tradition?

DishyFishy · 02/05/2022 09:29

@balalake what's the awful tradition of proms? It just seems like a party to end their school life before they disperse to different 6th form colleges etc.
They don't have to invite anyone if you're worried about certain people feeling excluded.

Next do some really nice ones with a choice of slim/skinny/regular cut etc

balalake · 02/05/2022 10:12

@DishyFishy heteronormative, expensive at a time when many struggle financially, another excuse for people with money showing off. Encouraging single use clothing, which is bad for the planet as much as fast fashion. Also starting the upscaling emotionally and practically so-called 'big' events, not in my view good for long-term good mental health.

DishyFishy · 02/05/2022 10:57

Not sure it's heteronormative as nobody is excluded but I'd probably agree with the rest of your post particularly the expense part in the current economic climate.
