Any recommendations for getting rid of dog pee smell on fake grass?

The smell is taking my breath away. It's so potent. I was told that pine cleaner would do it but it's not touched the stench.

Jeyes fluid should do the trick.

You'll need to give it a good scrub with a hard broom though & then rinse it thoroughly.

Jeyes etc will stink almost as much as the dog pee.

Hose it off and then spray with a mix of vinegar and water. That will neutralise the smell.

If you Google it you'll find various ratios and other things you can add, like bicarb, but the vinegar is the magic ingredient.

Honestly, don't have a dog and fake grass (sorry but someone had to say it)

WeAllHaveWings · 01/05/2022 14:18

One a year we treat our "grass" with moss killer, leave for a couple of days then remove the dead moss with a deck brush. Then we "clean" with a dog disinfectant.

Dog needs to stay off the grass for 3-4 days while it is being done and it is hard work.

Never noticed a pee aroma. Maybe it because we get more rain in Scotland so it is mostly rinsed away, or because the drainage was done well.

I like the smell of jeyes, along with creosote, dettol, petrol etc...

I do agree with Frenchfancy though, I wouldn't have fake grass.

Imthekingsmummy · 01/05/2022 14:21

@Frenchfancy no one tells you this until it's too late!

It's always going to smell, the urine doesn't really have anywhere to go. Unlike real grass where it washes down into the soil. Maybe give it a quick hosedown every night.

I like most if those too, which is why I didn't say "as bad as.." 🙂

Generously sprinkle with biological washing powder, leave it for 10 minutes or so then hose off. The enzymes in biological powder kill the bacteria that causes the smell of pee.

linerforlife · 01/05/2022 14:42

God all these chemicals to get rid of dog wee!! Washed off into the surrounding ground Sad I know you can't really go back now OP but I didn't know this about fake grass what a nightmare!

Frenchyq25 · 01/05/2022 14:51

Zep artificial grass cleaner from Screwfix. It's smells a bit like lavender.

megletthesecond · 01/05/2022 14:59

Get rid of the fake grass and turf it pronto. No more smell or chemicals needed.

Libertybear80 · 01/05/2022 14:59

I hate fake grass. Get rid of it. Not the dog. The fake grass!

WeAllHaveWings · 01/05/2022 15:13

For those saying get rid, we had no option but fake grass, chips or slabs. When we moved into our home the garden was chipped, we had it all dug out and a lawn put in, cost a fortune. We tried for 10 years to get the grass established, even had the lawn keeper at the local bowling club help us for 3 years before he told us to give up too, it was just impossible in our northfacing, heavy clay garden.

I'd love a lawn, but it is just not possible for some and fake grass made my garden useable and is much more pleasant than dreary slabs and/or chips. We have to treat the patio and chipped areas with algae remover every year too. Neighbours all have the same problems.

Not everyones garden space is the same and sometimes we have to work with what we've got.

JoeGoldberg · 01/05/2022 15:18

@WeAllHaveWings yep same here. It was chipped when we moved in and the neighbouring cats used it as a litter tray. 7 years of trying to get the lawn to take I finally admitted defeat and got fake turf. It's made a crappy garden pretty and usable.

lisaandalan · 01/05/2022 15:23

They do fake grass cleaner on the internet in different fragrances. X

LER83 · 01/05/2022 15:49

We use Simple solutions patio odour/stain remover and its amazing. It can be used on pretty much all outdoor surfaces. We've only got a paved courtyard garden and didn't really appreciate how much it would smell when we got our dog! This totally got rid of any trace of dog wee. We've bought a dog 'toilet' (artificial grass on a tray thing) so hopefully he will go on that so the patio remains pee free!

EggcellentTaste · 01/05/2022 15:52

Just for those who may be struggling today with heavy clay/north facing gardens. I had similar. We struggled for so long then ended up spent about £600 on a mix of compost, top soil and sand so that we could spread an inch or so across the existing lawn. Seeded on that with a shady mix seed and it has been brilliant ever since.

To keep it fresh, we aerate and brush more sand in every couple of years then sprinkle some more seed on. But it doesn't need it - it just helps it look top.

£600 is expensive but nothing compared to the cost of high quality artificial and, imo, the aeration and sanding is less maintenance as well.

Zoflora is great for this.
Hose the grass first and then put a few capfuls of Zoflora in a full watering can - then sprinkle over the grass. Smells lovely and really does make a difference.
