Can someone explain to me about blue badges

Ds has just been awarded blue badge and we’ll be using for first time today. I’ve read the little booklet and it says we can park on single or double yellows for up to 3 hours. Can’t remember the exact wording but something about as long as it’s not dangerous or blocking the road. This feels really odd, can we really just park on double yellows anywhere? Is there anything else I need to look out for that says we can’t park somewhere?

You can park on yellow lines. However in most London Boroughs, you cannot park on yellow lines if there are un/loading restrictions in place.

I think you need to be safe and considerate eg not parking on the wrap around yellow lines on the corner of a road if you could move 5 meters slightly further along and still manage your son.

Many of the central London boroughs have their own concessions and so you'd need to check their websites for specific info.

Yes, watch out for loading restrictions and don't park too close to a corner or across a dropped kerb

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/05/2022 12:19

It’s confusing isn’t it.

I think yellow lines painted across the kerb mean you can’t park on those particular double yellows.

Look out for perpendicular yellow stripes on the kerb. There will be a sign somewhere near by explaing time restrictions etc.

Thanks for comments, we are not in London. It’s the loading restrictions that are confusing me as I don’t know where they are, I suppose once we get used to going out and about and i know what I am actually looking for it will become clearer

The loading restrictions will be on a time plate but also you'll see yellow kerb markings. If you Google you'll find an example.

Depending on where you live, I would also consider a lockable wallet that you can use to display the badge in. Blue badge theft is a huge problem in certain areas. The lock goes through your steering wheel.

You can buy the wallets from amazon and Halfords.

It says on the info I got with the blue badge not to put in a plastic wallet as when it gets hot it can harm the hologram

Thanks for info everyone , I’ve parked on double yellows for first time today and was worried about doing something wrong and getting s ticket but we didn’t. I’ve also been taking more notice of the kerb markings and loading restrictions when out which is something I’d never had to do before

Thanks for this thread, I have never dared use mine yet

Dinoboymama · 01/05/2022 22:40

We've had a blue badge for Ds for 5 years now and I still don't park on double yellows as I worry I would do something wrong.

I also didn't notice the yellow lines on the kerbs much before he got his.

It can be a minefield. I never park on double yellow lines but I will park on singles which must be with the clock and only for 3 (or is it 4?) hours. On most residents' bays a clock is not needed and there's no time restriction. P&D, meters etc also need the clock to be displayed for up to 3 (or 4) hours

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/05/2022 23:27

Oh I wouldn’t park in a residents bay.

I have never parked on double yellows, I only really use the BB when DH has hospital or if we are going to the local retail park for a coffee so park in a space. One point to note though is that you have to be hyper aware of what's going on if you park on double yellows, I once watched a car get hit by the back end of a bus because it had parked on the DYs opposite the entrance to the bus station which buses had to right turn into. Woman was hopping mad. Bus driver couldn't understand how the turn had never been a problem before.
