Newbie to home work outs…what weight kettlebells?

I’m planning on starting some home workouts. What weight kettlebells should I buy? I was thinking an 8 and 10? Or would I need a 6? Any advice appreciated

10

Oooos, sorry - I would go heavier than 10 tbh. 6 is tiny. You want to build your resistance.

It's tricky because a 10 could be too heavy for a beginner for some moves (eg overhead press) but too light for other (eg swings). But it's not a bad compromise.

You can build strength really effectively through body weight exercises as well - push ups, squats etc. When you find them easy then play with the tempo or introduce a deficit.

I started with a 6. I’d have been able to hold a 10 but no way would I have been able to do much with it!

I guess it depends on the OPs level of fitness. Are you doing any strength training already?

It depends what you'll be using it for - 8 or 10 is likely to be too heavy for upper body exercises if you're a beginner but too light for swings/squats etc.
It also depends on your current level of strength - could you get a day pass for a gym if not already a member and try a few out?

Do not start with 10kg if you are completely new to doing weight training FGS !!!

If you went to a gym and spoke to a personal trainer not a single one would start you off on weights like that, as a newbie.

You will need different weights anyway:

  • heavier for movements like swings and squats/deadlifts
  • medium for things like overhead press
  • lighter for bicep curls/tricep extensions

I would go for 6 & 8 to start with, if they feel ok get a 10, but if those are too heavy add a 4
