Where do you get your news / current affairs?

I never watch TV news any more. It just doesn’t fit into my day plus I’m deaf so I find written or audio (via Bluetooth) media a lot more accessible. So all my news / current affairs media is now online.

I read the Guardian but only because it’s still free to access, and mostly I skim the headlines and read maybe two articles. I have a subscription to the FT through work which I enjoy. I also get a lot of ‘heads-up’ via Twitter, but I find my feed very quickly gets swamped by whatever I’ve been reading despite my attempts to keep it broad. I listen to loads of podcasts which I love.

does anyone subscribe to sites like Unherd, Substack, the Atlantic, Huffington Post? How do they work ? Are they online newspapers or essay collections? Do they have specific political biases and are there any U.K. equivalents ? I’m considering a subscription to the New European.

where / how / when do you get your news and current affairs ?

I use a variety of free online platforms: BBC, Sky, Al Jazeera, Guardian, Huff Post. I have Radio 4 on in the background a lot and listen to The News Quiz.

carefullycourageous · 01/05/2022 07:13

Lots of places, I watch Parliament Live in the background when working, read news sites and follow (reputable) journalists and commentators with varying views on Twitter.

I tell you where I don;t get my news - Daily Mail. What an absolute pile of shite that paper is, and their website is worse. Full of blatant lies.

workwoes123 · 01/05/2022 07:37

I realised that I didn’t even mention print media ! I don’t live in the UK but still follow the politics. FIL still trots off to the newsagent most mornings for his copy of the Daily Mail 🙄. I don’t think I’d buy a print paper anymore any way, though it can be handy a stack of old newspaper around for stuffing wet shoes etc.

Who still buys print media ? Our parents generation I guess.

I stopped watching the news during Covid. Now I occasionally glance at the headlines on the BBC and DM on line.

LabraDabraDoo · 01/05/2022 07:40

Radio 4 for daily news.
The Sunday Times for excellent news reporting
The Guardian app ( although the writing in the Guardian is much ropier than The Times)
Weekly ( paper) subscription to The New Statesman. It’s left-liberal leaning bit has very high quality writers. Good balance of world/ domestic news. Nice arts, nature, food, columnists at the back. I sometimes buy The Spectator for balance but don’t think it’s as good.
When I go on holiday I buy Prospect magazine at the Eurotunnel. It’s not news but I love it.

LabraDabraDoo · 01/05/2022 07:44

I still buy a paper copy of The Sunday Times. I love the feeling of reading a Sunday Paper and having it lying around means my DD13 dips in.

For firelighting purposes we do find it satisfyingly combustible ( if not inflammatory?!)

My New Statesman magazine arrives by post too. There’s an app option, but I don’t find looking at a screen as relaxing and would just get distracted by all the other internet in my phone.

workwoes123 · 01/05/2022 07:49

@LabraDabraDoo

I would certainly break my no paper rule for a Sunday. And a favourite treat when we come to the uK is stocking up on paper journals at the airport - New Statesman, Economist, New Scientist etc. And yes, I like them lying around / in the toilet reading pile for DS 14 to dip into.

Times radio is very good

Also R4

I don’t do Twitter and might see links to articles but prefer above

I’ve not tried Times radio, but it sounds interesting. Do you pick it up on DAB?

Violetparis · 01/05/2022 08:04

Another recommendation for Times Radio, I really enjoy their breakfast show during the week.

Violetparis · 01/05/2022 08:07

I listen to Times Radio through my phone or laptop while I'm working. Just google Times Radio and click on listen live. Not sure about getting it through the radio.

Dynamicsloth · 01/05/2022 08:08

BBC website/Today programme R4. I also have subs to the Times and Telegraph (know your enemy). I hate the Guardian due to their anti women bias.

spotcheck · 01/05/2022 08:14

Many libraries have online subscription services- you can get some publications for free. I had to download the borrowbox app

RidingMyBike · 01/05/2022 08:19

We have subs to Guardian (print) and Independent (online only) which are six days a week.

We buy a local print newspaper each time it's published (have found otherwise the local social media sites are just reports of the youth behaving suspiciously and people complaining about parking permits!).

Radio 4, especially Today programme.
BBC app on my phone.

And I follow some links to online newspaper articles from FB/Twitter but I'm v aware they're only showing me certain things!

RidingMyBike · 01/05/2022 08:21

Oh and CBBC Newsround turned out to be surprisingly good when DD moved on from CBeebies!

AnnoyingAnon · 01/05/2022 08:24

South Park. 😅

TheVanguardSix · 01/05/2022 08:26

Guardian
Consortium News

I listen to a few political podcasts during dog walks in order to get a better understanding of geopolitical situations.

I get it through Alexa but I think you could

I wish I had discovered it earlier. I’m listening now and it’s extremely good on Ukraine - in depth re Putin motivations and what is happening etc
