As you can probably tell by the username, I was blown away by the musical this week seeing it on tour.

Has anyone else seen it?

Absolutely loved it!!! Was brilliant

It was a bit meh. And I love musical theatre.

I've seen it, really enjoyed it. Not a patch on Kinky Boots, but still a great night out.

I really enjoyed it. The bit where the mum sings about her 'boy' was incredibly moving.

Why will it date?

Figgygal · 01/05/2022 15:55

Just remembered the real Jamie was in the audience with his mum the night i went to see it last year

I was expecting to find it emptional but tbh her vocals were so so amazing that I was more in awe!

Saw it last week, it was good fun.

I LOVE musicals but I've held off watching this one because everything about it, from the poster to the title, is so obnoxious and "me me me". Drag is an irritating bore too. Just seems all-round off-putting but the reviews are good enough to make me mildly curious.

So can somebody tell me - is it a pile of sexist woman-larping nonsense or is it a genuinely decent show that even drag-averse feminists will appreciate?

Fabtasticfanatic · 01/05/2022 20:10

I couldn't get through the film. I don't understand why his Mum is lying to him about his Dad wanting nothing to do with him or why a teen so self aware and confident to be out as gay in secondary school doesn't just recognise his Dad is a twat and tell him to fuck off. (Yes, dredges up a lot of childhood father issues!)

I'm a drag averse feminist and I still enjoyed it. 😉

Mum doesn't want to hurt him so hides it for so long. He doesn't want to face it?

She lies to him because she doesn't want him to know his dad had rejected him. She thinks that's the best thing for him. I guess she started the lie when he was little and then couldn't come clean.

Any I think Jamie knows deep down that his dad's a twat. He just isn't ready to confront that yet.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 02/05/2022 11:23

I found it really cliched and cringey

He doesnt know that he's a twat though. He thinks he sent things. Mum lies because she doesn't want to tell her son that he is disgusted with him, I think that's pretty obvious.

Having said that, I think the dad is a pointless role. In the musical, it's Hugo that rescues him from the fight when he's drunk, which is lovely. However, what it does is take away the only good point of the film for his dad.

In the musical , the dad is always the producer and doubles up as the drag queen. There's an extra scene where the mum sings about her life with the dad which is simply stunning.

I'm not a fan of drag, at all.

I don't think it's sexist at all. Spoiler alert for anyone who doesn't want to know....

Jamie starts off the musical wanting to wear his shoes and be a drag queen. He meets Hugo and becomes a star by accident (interestingly enough his drag persona is called Mimi). However, as his attitude changes with the fame and he hurts his mum and his best friend, and he has the run in with his dad, he realises he doesn't want to be a drag queen. He wants to be himself and wear dresses.

Now, the adversaries would claim that he can do what he wants anyway, but in the real world it's not that simple. We go on a journey with him.

In the musical, Jamie is very show offy but the reason I resonate with him is that the actor (who finished the role this week) himself has his own issues with being gay and a POC and also wears dresses. So while yes, he probably is quite "me", if you will, it's coming from a place of finding a home.

If you haven't seen the film, I'd try it. Drag is a small part of a beautiful story.

Oh, and Jamie is a real person.

I saw it about 3 years ago with Layton Williams as Jamie. I absolutely loved it! I thought they did quite well with the film too.
