Gluten free picnic foods?

Camomila · 30/04/2022 21:04

DH's best mate/DS1s godfather is coming to visit for the Bank Holiday and I have suggested a nice walk on the downs and a picnic with the DC.

Is there anything more exciting (but still easy) I can make, than a sandwich with gluten-free bread? 😊

Gf sausage rolls (either fresh from m&s or frozen in a lot of supermarkets), loads of shops sell gf quiche and pork pies, gf cold pizza, gf sausages cut up like cocktail sausages, a selection of cheeses with Italian meats?

QuebecBagnet · 30/04/2022 21:13

I did find some gf cocktail sausages in tesco recently.

m&S have a load of gluten free picnic type food - pork pies, sausage rolls, quiches etc.

if you want to DIY it -

sausage rolls made using gluten free pastry.

Scotch eggs with GF sausages and GF breadcrumbs.

Spanish tortilla wedges

chicken legs

Crisps (check they are gluten free). Lidl does a version of pringles that are gluten free, alternatively any gluten free crisps.

Rice or bean salads

Potato salad

cherry tomatoes/ cucumber/ carrot batons and dips

Rice salad is a good shout if you have a cool bag.

Cold cooked rice, chopped cucumbers, olives, sweetcorn, grated carrot, gherkins and peppers, vinagrette dressing. Bags of tomatoes and lashings of ginger beer.

I hate gluten-free bread.

Small stuffed red peppers - spicy and delicious! And stuffed vine leaves are great. (Both from Tesco). Crisps can be a minefield, so double check those.
And always check the list of ingredients on the packaging - major allergens are in bold. Avoid anything on the list mentioning gluten (wheat, rye, oats and barley). Also don't buy anything that says 'May contain gluten / wheat / rye / oats / barley). Use separate cutlery and dishes from gluten containing things to avoid cross contamination and then just relax. Remember - wine is definitely gluten free, and you can now buy gluten free beer, though I haven't tried it. Best of luck!

I agree. Most gluten free bread either has a weird texture or is way too sweet. However, I've discovered Schar bread is pretty good and not over sweet. Make a cheese and tomato sandwich with it and bung it in the microwave until the cheese melts. Then eat with salad and olives. It's my GoTo lunch.

Ooh thanks, lots of good ideas, especially the M&S tip, we have an M&S food nearby so will probably go for the easy option!

M&S chorizo and red pepper frittata and the beetroot coleslaw. Along with carrot and cucumber sticks, corn tortillas and dips
That's what we had last weekend!

My DD is coeliac and I make quick mini crustless quiches. Basically a couple of eggs, stir in some milk and cheese, add ham or whatever you like and put in a cupcake tin. Bake for about 15 minutes.

WombatChocolate · 30/04/2022 21:38

Lots of nice salads in supermarkets in small pots - coronation chicken, tomato mozzarella etc. satay chicken is nice.

There are gluten free quiches in most supermarkets now or falafel.

Some nice fruit and maybe gluten feee brownies (that everyone can eat) will go down well. Lots of crisps are gluten free - but check ingredients.

Anything like home made chicken drumsticks, nice cheeses. Enjoy!
