What plants/shrubs would be evergreen with flowers and look nice in front of a summerhouse/shed

I could use pot or I can plant straight into the ground which might be less maintenance

I started thinking fushias
but they die right back over the winter don’t they
I’d like something ever green that will look nice and green all year but also with lovely flowers

any ideas please ?

Jasmine if it's sheltered, or some clematis are evergreen.

SarahAndQuack · 30/04/2022 21:08

Depends how big you want it to get, and how you want it to grow.

If you want a shrub that could get quite tall, ceanothus is evergreen, low maintenance, with lovely blue flowers in summer. Or vibernum tinus has pretty white/pink flowers in early spring.

If you want something smaller and/or easier to grow around the summerhouse, how about an evergreen clematis? Or something like trachelospermum jasminoides, which has evergreen leaves that go a lovely red in autumn, and white flowers in summer?

Or if you're looking for something smallish (the previous two will eventually get to over 6 foot), euphorbias are lovely and very easy. Euphorbia mellifera has flowers that smell like honey. The only issue is the sap is not good to get on your skin, so if you're thinking you'll brush past them often, maybe not. Or something like rosemary, which is evergreen with pretty blue flowers, and would smell great whenever you passed?

Oh - and osmanthus is lovely. Scented white flowers and pretty dark green leaves.

Camellias are evergreen. lovely flowers in spring. depends on your soil if they will thrive though.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 01/05/2022 00:30

I suppose I was thinking like 4 ft high maybe

I can see I m going to need to Google some of these, cameilias I love
i will Google what soil they do best in I think it’s limey
whixh it isn’t round here but maybe I could dig a very large hole put in weed membrane
t then add the special soil then add the plant
kinda trying to make the plant sit in its preferred soil ?

ceanothus just Google these and yes they grownwell Doing here as o seem them locally
I like the standard ones that look a bit like lolly pop trees

I was thinking some thjng in front of the shed/summerhouse more then really actually growing on it
so although I like clematis
I’m worried it might cause damage
but I didn’t know you can get ever green ones

Rhododendron perhaps? They are poisonous though if there’s children about.

fortifiedwithtea · 01/05/2022 09:05

Choisya Ternata - Sundance white flowers but grown more for the leaves. Evergreen. Young leaves are yellowish turn darker green with age. Its bushy , plant several feet in front of your shed to give it room to fill the gap

notnownora · 01/05/2022 09:22

Gin and tonic plant (eriostemon myoporoides which I had to look up). It is evergreen and is covered in pretty small flowers for months. I have 3 and they don't really need much care. They can be shaped easily if needed, they grow quite bushy but are bouncy and supple.

SarahAndQuack · 01/05/2022 14:46

trachelospermum jasminoides is that jasmine

Botanically, no, it's not the same plant you'd use to (eg) make jasmine tea. But it has a lovely jasmine fragrance and is very pretty. Lots of companies sell it under the name star jasmine. But it's not self-supporting so perhaps not right for you.

I agree choysia is nice and I love the smell of it when you brush against it.

HoundHound · 01/05/2022 15:49

Daphnes smell amazing and they are evergreen.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 03/05/2022 15:45

Just looked up Choisya Ternata
yes that’s nice
ideally
i prefer pinks and purples which I realise I should have said !
would have been helpful

i do love jasmine so I might try and find a space for some somewhere on my garden

Came here to recommend ceanothus.

Littlemissprosecco · 03/05/2022 15:54

Hebe’s are easy to look after, they grow to big, you just chop them back. They’re evergreen, have flowers through spring and summer, there are many different types

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 03/05/2022 15:58

Honeysuckle - simply because of the aroma. Would grow through/entwine with other plants and doesn’t get upset with being chopped back. I’ve got several from a dump bin and two seem to keep their leaves, but if amongst other plants you might not notice bare winter stems, which can look quite ethereal.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 03/05/2022 17:10

Hebe’s ohhh these are just lovely !!’
honeysuckle I love the smell but again I’m guessing would climb all over the shed potentially damaging it
also wonder if you can get them that are just pink not pink and yellow

I’m sure I’ll find something tomorrow
thanks so much for the help
I really admire people that know about flowers and plants and trees and how to grow stuff

OP posts:
Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 03/05/2022 17:34

No the honeysuckle won’t damage your shed. You could put up wire or trellis to train it up. You could just chop it whenever it gets to climbing/big and it will happily
take it hacking! I’ve got one in a shady corner by my shed - and I’m a hack it type gardener rather than a gardener by dates/professional advice!!! It’ll also happily take water torture!!

Fleur405 · 03/05/2022 17:51

We have an evergreen Californian lilac tree - I believe it’s otherwise known as a ceanothus! It’s lovely and grows well in partial shade.

SarahAndQuack · 03/05/2022 18:04

Honeysuckle Rhubarb and Custard might be a good bet then? Despite the name, it's not pink and yellow really - it's dominantly a deep pink with cream, and it has a lovely shape to it (some honeysuckles can be a bit leggy).

Agree Hebe might be good for you.

Oldraver · 03/05/2022 19:14

I second (third) Choisa, I have a yellow w and green variety both now in full bloom and another bloom later in the year as well, though white flowers

It always looks lovely all year round

bigbeautifulmonster · 03/05/2022 19:52

Some lovely ideas here. Make sure you look up what time of year the plants flower too... when I started gardening I planted a few things thinking I was going to get a riot of colour blunt realising that different plants flower at different times of year 🤦‍♀️
Particularly thinking of your enthusiasm towards daphne.. very early Spring, when you might prefer something that flowers when you're more likely to be lounging in the garden for eg.
Though I'm a huge fan of daphne 😊
