Rude, ignorant, or simply meh?

I'm out shopping and it's quite busy. At work, our head- a 64 year old man - remarked that people are generally rude. He says he's held open doors, allowed people to go in front of him, offered a seat on the train or bus and so on, and very rarely gets a thank you. I thought I'd see if I noticed the same thing. I have, but I'm not bothered by it to the extent he is. He seems to have a real bee in the bonnet about it. 🐝

I don't think it's that anyone is deliberately being rude or ignorant. It just doesn't occur to them. I'd say thanks to someone who did that for me but I wouldn't expect it. I wouldn't expect a man to give up a seat for me either and I'd politely decline.

What do you think? Are we getting ruder? Or just blasé?

How interesting that you can take time out of your busy shopping day to muse on this conundrum. What is your age and sex/gender as you indicate that this is a factor?

And how interesting that you have time to be so sarky.

I think older people have the privilege of being nicer as life wasn't/isn't such a drag for them. The economy wasn't tanking when they were in their prime; stuff was more affordable; a family could get by on a single salary.

I'm sorry you feel that way, it seemed like a non-sequitur, that's all.

@veronicagoldberg I am sure you're right, those were the days. People weren't as fat then, either.

I was thinking today in the supermarket (London) that the people sort of moved around each other instead of saying excuse me, as if you did it would take ages and I wondered if that was always the case.

I am quite old and I don't think people are less polite.

Skydreams · 30/04/2022 20:48

I think it’s a mix, no more or less polite but I do find so many parents with prams just bowl straight through when you hold a door open for them without a word of thanks. They would soon kick off if someone let the door close and it hit their pram. I always say a simple thanks if someone holds a door open for me, and did it even more so when I was using the pram. But I’m sure most will claim that parents are too tired to say thanks..

I like being polite and sharing a smile with people.
