head MRI for 19 year old - we need to be there, right? in case it's really bad?

I'd appreciate some help from those with experience.
our student son is having some neurological symptoms investigated urgently, hopefully just from an infection.
my husband and I are debating whether one of us should be there. I was there for the last appointment and whilst the downside was that he picked up a bit on my anxiety the upside was that I asked some important questions and picked up that our local hospital had failed to forward on notes.
I appreciate that no mri technician is going to talk to him or us about results but presumably if they saw something obviously abnormal they would alert the radiolgist who would alert the doctors and things would happen pretty quickly? in other words we do need to be there? Plus I think it would be useful to have his dad there in case he finds the MRI experience scary. His dad is taking on the "not worried" role right now.

Experience from those in the MRI world/who see people in MRIs particularly appreciated.

How is your DS doing? Did he get the surgery? Have my fingers crossed that he is post surgery and doing well.

Yes! Thank you.

the operation itself is straightforward. He is recovering well. I left him for a few hours, went to Urban Outfitters and placed myself in the hands of the shop assistants. They were really helpful. Returned with a cool summer wardrobe for him including, crucially, hats. He was excited about it. Can’t try on the tops yet because he still has bits of haematoma coming out of his head!

what a week!

The surgeon has written to his tutor to say he “might be a bit tired” for the rest of the term.....not sure if he will take exams.

what a lovely problem to have compared to this time last week.

Oh I am so glad, and how kind of you to go clothes shopping for him..a lovely treat. I hope he heals well and is back at school soon.

Gosh, what an absolute rollercoaster for you all.

I hope he bounces back. He was off to the gym with a sub-D so he sounds like he’s a bit of a force to be reckoned with. Good for him.

Do they know what may have caused it? I had a close friend with something similar and the cause was never really discovered. He’s healthier than ever now.

Much love to you all. May the future be bright.

thank you.
i think today be a bit stressful because I don’t know whether he will get much follow up care before discharge.
best head to ward!

Aha, he needs follow up scans before he can escape and will get a lecture from the consultant too!

I hope he can go home soon. Do they know what caused it? They can very occasionally recur so they’ll scan to check it hasn’t and then he’ll be free to go home to rest and check out his new threads 🙂

Herejustforthisone - thank you. He has lucked out by being under an absolute top-notch consultant who I trust. Mr top- notch is playing detective looking for causes other than drunken head-bump, as is his job. The longer we stay here the more like a dream normal life seems - and of course being in a hospital feels a bit like being in a spaceship/endless round the world flight.

The NHS finally kicked me out of the on-site staff accommodation yesterday. Sleeping further away last night it really hit me.

Anyway his head wound looks pretty cool - staples in head. he’s thinking of shaving the rest of the wounded side so he looks more kickass and less nice boy.

did we really sign up for this when we gave birth? Can I change my mind?
