Does a Bank nurse have the ability to access people’s medical records?

Quick question.
Don’t want to go into much detail as it could be outing, but does anyone know if Bank nurses can look at anyone’s medical records if they wanted to?
I know anyone working in such a field is never supposed to look without a very good reason, and I’ve been led to believe that bank nurses cannot access notes even if they tried to, but I’m not sure if that’s true?

If I do contact the relevant people and ask for my records to be checked in case she has accessed them , Will they only check up to a recent certain time frame do you think? Or can they check back further ? The reason I ask is because she’s worked there for about 10yrs.

They could access the patients hospital record, but not their GP or general medical notes. So only notes that had been made in that hospital. Some systems would allow you access the GP care record which will say the medications the patient is on and general diagnosis but you are supposed to gain patients permission for this, and someone regularly accessing this of people who aren't inpatients in the hospital should flag up

If its computer based notes it's fairly easy to access because obviously you just type in the name, but very traceable. If it's paper notes then it's harder as you'd have to get the physical paper copy of the notes, and you have to request them and thats going to look really suspect as a bank nurse. Some hospitals don't even keep all their paper notes on site so it's very variable.

All of it should be traceable though.

I once worked in a hospital where a colleague accessed a reasonable quantity of notes of people that werent inpatients and this flagged up and they got in a lot of trouble

They had a valid reason, and it was essentially that one department hadn't given their name to another to say they would be accessing these records. But it was surprisingly how quickly the flag was triggered and how low the threshold was, and the hospital took it very very seriously even though they were supposed to be accessing the records. So I would be surprised if someone regularly accessing random hospital records didn't flag up

Bank nurses can access notes while at work as they work for the trust and just move from dept to dept. Agency nurses can't access, theres a lot that aren't allowed to do in the trust I worked in.
If you take it to the trust as a complaint, they can see exactly who has looked at your notes. Each nurse has their own log in for access and it shows when they logged in what they looked at and for how long.

Any nurse can access the paper records of the patients they are looking after on the ward they are working on at the time unless the other permanent tnurses are responsible for writing up all the notes. A bank nurse is employedby the Trust and has to follow the same rules as everyone else so if they are accessing other patients notes that is a disciplinary process and can be traced. Bear in mind though that some nurses and doctors forget to switch their log in off or get called away and someone can use their log in to look up notes. Some wards are also really careless ,leaving notes around or not locking the trolley.
