Dog heart murmur nothing to 3 in a month??

Apologies for duplicating but I'm not getting much in Dog section...

Freaking out...our Cavie has just been to the vets to have routine dental treatment and they've advised against doing it because they say has a grade 3 heart murmur. He's almost 7 years old and was at the vets last month and his heart was fine and always has been.

Can it really go from fine to grade 3 in a month and if so does that mean it's something more sinister and he'll deteriorate rapidly?

He's booked in to have an ultra sound next week. I'm in bits.

I'm sceptical. My dog was diagnosed with a grade 4 at his annual health check 14 months ago. I declined further investigations as he had no symptoms. He has been fine ever since. At his last health check the vet said he had a v minor murmur, nothing to worry about. Very odd.
How is your dog generally? Any symptoms?

He's the fittest he's ever been! Lost a bit of lockdown weight, just come back from a week running on beaches in Northumberland, he's in great health!

I'm wondering whether to go to another vet for a second opinion?

Our dog was diagnosed with a heart murmur soon after we got him. He died in 2014 aged 13. Don’t panic. Just be sensible with him, plenty of exercise and keep his weight down. I used to be terrified he’d drop dead when he was racing round.

I've given another vet a call, they say go for the scan and see what that says.

My worry is if it's gone from nothing to 3 in 1 month it's some hideous heart disease and he'll be dead soon.

I don't think I can get another pet, my heart just gets too attached.

Good luck, hopefully nothing to worry about. I'm very much of the opinion that if an animal is happy and active with no symptoms it is better to leave things as they are and avoid medicating them. The pills etc have side effects which can be worse than the original problem.

Our dog was diagnosed with a heart murmur at 6 months. I declined the investigation, he's now 12 and still really fit. Honestly glad we didn't panic, he's barely been to the vets over his life so far. Remember vets are a big business.
