Are there many SFX make up courses in the U.K.?

My dd is 14, very artistic and loves experimenting with sfx make up.
She would love a career in the tv, theatre and film industry in this field.
I have started looking for courses but there is nothing in our area but we are only an hours train ride to London, so that is a viable option.
I have found a 2 year course in Elstree Studios but it’s nearly £30,000 which is way out of our budget (seems there funding is no longer available.)
Does anyone know of any places in the U.K. who offer a diploma in SFX make up?

Have you looked at University of arts London- (London college of Fashion) who do a BA in Hair make up and prosthetics for performance?

Thetoasterhasbroken · 27/04/2022 19:06

No I haven’t, we will look into that. Thank you.

There is a degree in it, at normal tuition fee levels and it is ScreenSkills accredited.

DH did his at the University of Bradford. She will have to be really hard working and talented to break into TV and film though! DH is talented but no ambition so now he's just someone who works in a call centre but comes in really handy at Halloween Hmm

Our local college's adult education site do film make up. Not sure of the exact title.

MrsPnut and whoami24601 great, thank you.
whoami24601 That’s a real shame, it does look like a very cut throat industry but she’s very determined to try 🤞

I’ve had a look here but can’t find anything very local. You’re not in Essex by any chance?

Bath Academy of Media Make-Up. Expensive though, and you have to be 18.

They do some one day courses for youngsters though.

I think my cousin is currently on this course: aub.ac.uk/course/make-up-for-media-and-performance

Online is also an option, although don't get a formal qualification at the end.

dicksmithmake-up.com/ (I did enrol years ago, but never got around to finishing)

Loads of make-up FX courses at www.stanwinstonschool.com/
It is subscription based, and they often have huge sales on. I use it mainly for the sculpting courses.

To be honest op she needs to find a course with strong industry links so she can get placements out on sets and make contacts. Once she’s her foot in the door with some folk she’ll get work if she’s good, dedicated and hardworking. It’s a brutal industry, I work in film and the hours are insane, the work life balance is shockingly bad and it’s incredibly hard to get established. She may have to work for a good few years on trainee rates post qualification but if she sticks at it an enjoys the industry she’ll have a fabulous time. I love my job and get immense satisfaction out of it.
The course honestly doesn’t matter, she could do a crappy college course but if one of the tutors is well connected to people and can offer contacts and placements that’s 50% of the battle to get started

Thetoasterhasbroken · 27/04/2022 20:06

Thank you everyone, we will look into everything.
Aphantasia She most definitely needs to give it serious thought and consideration but I do believe she has the drive and passion, so fingers crossed.

I'd second the Stan Winston school.

You can sign up for a 7 day free trial (don't forget to cancel) & you can sign up just for 1 month from time to time (it's $20 a month for basic but if you email them they have discounts for full time students) if you don't want to keep it all the time.

MrsPnut · 27/04/2022 20:22

I know about child with a dream, DD wants to be a game artist, so we have researched courses and A levels carefully.
What @Aphantasia says is definitely true, opportunities to get industry experience on the course is vital to make connections.
