18yo DS had a bike accident this morning

He's having a terrible time of things recently for various reasons, most stemming from the fact that his dad died last year after a long and painful illness. Pretty traumatic for all concerned.

DS is also an introvert whose comfort zone is to stay in his room by himself. So, whilst lockdown was comfortable for him, it probably didn't do him a lot of good long term - he wfh throughout.

The few friends he had seem to be long gone, he doesn't want to do anything or go anywhere and he's had quite a few performance issues at work, he's not talking to anyone and it's very hard to know what's going on with him..

Today he's had a collision on his bike on the way to work. He's bruised and grazed, but he doesn't seem too badly hurt. He says he didn't bang his head. But he's come home, taken painkillers (says work sent him home) and gone to bed where he's stayed all day.

I'm really worried about him on a number of fronts, but do you think he needs medical attention for his injuries?

Keep a close eye on him and go with your gut instinct

CaptainCarp · 27/04/2022 16:04

Are you able to wake him?
Check his helmet for marks. Any on it then you know he's banged it
(I would recommend replacing it anyway)

Is this bicycle or motorcycle by the way?

It's a bicycle. Yes, he's awake.

I absolutely don't mean to scaremonger and I apologise if this is alarming but I'd feel awful if I didn't say anything. I had an acquaintance who fell about 8ft from a ladder, didn't think they had particular hurt themselves just a bit of a sore head. Had their lunch and decided to have a lie down as they were a bit sore and unfortunately didn't wake up again. Materialised they had had a bleed on the brain. For this reason alone I am quite paranoid about bumps on the head, accidents and so on. I would always always get checked over in these instances, but I appreciate a lot of that is down to my own personal worry and experiences

Similar happened to the lovely actress Natasha Richardson after a skiing accident.

Hope your son is OK Woodenclock.

Not to scare you but keep an eye on him especially if he injured his abdomen , he could have an internal bleed .

DH is a cyclist. Could you try and find out how he fell, look at crash helmet, clothing, shoes and bike. Could show whether he fell sideways onto his shoulder or something more high impact. I would try and find out which part of the body the pain killers were for and any information about what happened (did he fall off? Did he ride into something? Did someone drive into him?) all should give some idea of how worried to be

WoodenClock · 27/04/2022 17:01

The grazes are all down the side of his torso. It doesn't sound like they were going very fast. He collided with another cyclist, who came up from an underpass to join the cycle path he was on.
