Phantom blister - wtf?! Really painful

Disclaimer - this is a boring, petty, first-world problem.

So I bought these wonderful sandals last year, they're basically a walking boot sole with pretty straps for the upper and I walked miles in them last year with no issues. I have plantar fasciitis and generally painful feet, as well as a long-term knee problem, so they were a real find.

Wore them for a 9 mile walk yesterday, and started to feel what felt like a blister forming on the bottom of my left foot. Ignored it for a bit, thinking it's just my feet needing to toughen up to the sandals again and would be OK.

Wore them again today, and after 4 miles, the pain was really bothering me - I was limping. It feels exactly like when you've rubbed off a blister and are walking on the raw flesh underneath - like someone's holding a lit cigar on my foot.

Stopped for a quick pint and made DH have a really close look at it - nothing there. Not even a red patch! Should I just try and ignore it, and carry on wearing the sandals back in? Put a plaster over something that isn't there? Grr!! Angry

I’ve just gone back into sandles and the same as you, some don’t feel as comfortable as they did but I do think that feet need to acclimatise to sandles after being covered up all winter.
Wear something different for a couple of walks and stick a big plaster on the sore bit.

I suppose I will stop moaning and put a plaster over it, then. There's something so unsettling about expecting to find a huge ripped blister, and...nothing.

No advice I'm afraid but I get this exact thing! And it's totally unpredictable - sometimes I get it in a certain pair of shoes, sometimes I don't. It feels like burns on the soles of my feet and it's agony. I think it's a combination of heat and friction but there doesn't really seem to be any pattern to it.

@peachgreen yes! Bloody agony! And very like a small, localised burn.

I'll try and find a link to the sandals (though I fully expect to be eviscerated by the terrifying MN Style 'n' Beauty lot who will loathe them)

Have you checked the sandal for anything sticking out. Could have caused a pressure point.

Pinched nerve can feel like a burn sometimes.

Can you wear ankle socks?

I've started wearing ankle socks with hiking sandals and don't care what I look like when I'm trekking in the wilderness!

No obstruction on the sole that I can feel, I did have a good check when I got home. I could wear ankle socks, but I love the freeing feeling of sandals with bare feet, it makes me feel like it's summer (and I've finally found decent chub rub underwear that doesn't ride up, so I can wear non-bifurcated clothing without tights Grin)

I hadn't thought about tightening up the straps to minimise rubbing, I tend to have them loose because my ankles swell up. Will try them tighter.

I'm beyond grateful that people have bothered to engage with my incredibly tedious foot problem - thank you Flowers

I get this. Feels like when you burn your wrist on an oven shelf, but on the bottom of your foot and inside it! I was told it's due to repetitive trauma of forcing a particular point down on a hard surface

I get this when I wear shoes that I haven't worn for some time, eg, going into summer footwear after winter wear, or wearing a particular pair that hasn't been worn for a while, like for a wedding.

I think our feet wear shoes down in a particular way so when we revisit an old pair then they do feel odd and I suppose that your feet have moved on a bit since the shoes were last worn.
