Any tax advisors about

I would be really grateful for a steer. I received a large (to me) lump sum disability payment from my employer last year. It went for advance clearance, was agreed and was paid tax free under 406 itepa and my employment ended.

Otherwise I "earnt" under £50k and don't have any investment property or any of the other things you would normally have to file a tax return for.

So my question is did I have income over £50k for the purposes of working out whether I have to file a tax return?

Many thanks in advance.

Is the £50K limit you’re referring to in relation to the High Income Child Benefit Charge? As far as I’m aware (am Chartered Tax Advisor) there’s no £50K earnings threshold whereby you have to submit a tax return purely by virtue of earning over that amount in a tax year.

Is it if your taxable income is in excess of £150k or £100k then you need to do a tax return? Cant remember!

As the PP asks, do you mean for child benefit?

Taxable income over £100k requires a tax return and HMRC write to you to tell you.

Over £100k taxable earnings and over £50k triggers the need to file a tax return if you claim child benefit. I'm neither of those.

I received a 6 figure settlement that HMRC have agreed (advance clearance) is non taxable and it was paid free of nics and paye.

You answered your own question so you need to ignore that income as it’s non taxable

itstaxing · 27/04/2022 17:30

Yes that's what I was hoping, but when I filled in the online "do you need to complete a tax return" it only asked about income, not taxable income.

You can read the literature on what counts as income

itstaxing · 27/04/2022 20:40

It's not on my p60 or P45. Sorry I'm not sure which literature you mean - the manual is huge!

I don't want to have to file unnecessarily but equally don't want to not if I should have.

If I file, I think I have to put it down as well as the exemption.
