Why do people still try to sell video tapes?

I keep seeing on Facebook of people selling bundles of video tapes. Usually Disney.

They aren’t even selling them that cheap tbh. £10 for 9 of them.

Charity shops won’t even take them anymore because they can’t sell them.

Most of the time, you can’t even give them away. Not many people still have a video player

It’s very odd, maybe they are collectibles?

I did a car boot sale about 5 years ago and had a bunch of rubbish Nintendo DS games (already old and outdated at the time) they were the first items to sell and the buyer looked like he would fall over when I said £1 each! I should have said much higher apparently. What on Earth they are good for I don’t know!

Soubriquet · 27/04/2022 10:53

No. These are just your run of the mill Disney videos

Old Nintendo games..now that’s a market I never thought would be collectible

There is stuff that has never be digitalised.

But disney movies that could be on Disney+? Can't see the market

A lot of old video games can only be played in that format and people still like them, so it's quite different from videos of films which can now be viewed in lots of more modern ways.

In terms of the videos - I guess it's because everyone has an old collection they need rid of and it seems a shame to just throw them away. If they don't spend a lot of time talking to charity shop workers, they'll discover for themselves just how few people are still interested in buying them.

Exactly.

Its always old Disney movies I see being sold too.

I would understand if they were an ultra rare copy of some random film but with Disney+, they are all on there

I still have a VCR. Videos are better than DVDs - they have more longevity. They rarely become unplayable even if the quality deteriorates a bit, Whereas DVDs pixellate and jump and become unusable at the slightest scratch.

I just realised that we still have VHS videos and a VCR - we could watch the videos.

The VCR is carefully stored away (I’ve no idea why DH insists on keeping it)

I only convinced DH to get rid off the gigantic CRT TV (in storage as a “back up”) a few years ago.

There’s a shop near us that still loans them out. Rent on the high street is extortionate so I can only assume it must be a front for something else but I could be wrong and people could still be borrowing them

FetchezLaVache · 27/04/2022 11:04

I agree and tbh it even mystifies me when I see people trying to sell bundles of DVDs of mainstream/not rare films!

Some of the old Disney videos are apparently collectors items now. I'm kicking myself for getting rid of my kids ones. I also gave away a Sega negative and a shedload of games years ago. My son recently bought a negative and some games on ebay!!

We used to buy and resell old video tapes and a couple of times the buyers said they were for their dcs with autism, who enjoyed watching the videos repeatedly and had worn out their own copies. They didn't just want them for the film or tv program itself but specifically asked if they featured the particular trailers and extras that were on their previous copies.

Thesearmsofmine · 27/04/2022 11:27

Some Disney ones are collectibles now I think and can go for a good amount of money.

Quite a few people are coming to the realisation that old tech is sometimes better than what superseded it.

For comparison, look at the recent resurgence of vinyl over CDs.

What old tech tends to have above new is simplicity and single-cost. You are not paying subscriptions or having to buy add-ons (gaming) to get the full experience. It's also often more robust.
