Removing labels from jars

greyinganddecaying · 27/04/2022 09:54

I have some small Kilner-type jars I'm trying to repurpose but finding it hard to get the original labels off them.

Tried soaking, hot water etc but they're still welded on.

Any tips for removing then please?

I find that a spot of WD40 does the trick.

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 27/04/2022 09:57

WD40, or mayonnaise can help as well. The fat in mayo breaks down the adhesive, got that tip from Kim and Aggie when they were removing stickers from a kids bed.

Cheaper the mayo the better

Nail varnish remover.

Or score the labels with a sharp knife and rub olive oil over them. Obvs care needed as oily hands plus oily glass = high drop potential.

Good luck.

Placemarking- having the same odd problem Smile

Vegetable oil does the trick. Well, any oil really.

I use an oven scraper, pop them in boiling water and when just about bearable to hold or wearing oven gloves start scraping.

Sometimes warming with a hairdryer can help other methods work more quickly

Thanks all this is really helpful. I'd not thought of oil/wd40/mayo.

I'll give them a go.

Acetone nail polish remover does the trick

SweetNcrunchy · 27/04/2022 10:53

Also put them in the top basket of the dishwasher on a high heat setting and sometimes they are just off and loose in the basket when its finished. (Bonne Maman jam jars in particular).

SatinHeart · 27/04/2022 10:55

Dishwasher - ours gets them off on the eco cycle (3+ hrs, not that hot but has a long soak)

Soak in warm water and washing up liquid for a good while then get a decent scrubber/scourer and apply elbow grease.

Nail Varnish remover helps.

It can take a few days for me going back and forth and leaving in water and pouring boiling water on. I keep most jars and this is a worthwhile pursuit but just takes a while.

nearlyspringyay · 27/04/2022 11:12

We have 'sticky stuff remover' and 'Goo Gone', they are basically WD40

sophs29 · 27/04/2022 11:14

I always use bicarbonate of soda and distilled vinegar and it works well for me! Interested to hear about the mayo though! Let us know Smile

JengaTower · 27/04/2022 11:30

Washing up liquid followed by the scrubby side of that scrubber with the smiley face Smile

jytdtysrht · 27/04/2022 11:31

Scrub with the pink stuff

StooOrangeyForCrows · 27/04/2022 11:34

Brasso will get anything off anything.
