Lump on cervix

Ithinkimightbebroken · 25/04/2022 19:18

Posting here for traffic. Not sure if anyone here can talk me down- I’m about ready to book my funeral at this point.

I have discovered I have a lump on my cervix. Nothing funny going on, just when TTC I read about cycle tracking so know what it felt like a year ago!
I have a mild prolapse post DC and brushed up against the cervix while trying to feel how bad the prolapse is. I would be more embarrassed explaining this story if I wasn’t terrified!

Its not a cyst, it’s hard and nobbly and feels like it covers the surface a little bit. It’s also painful after I’ve touched it.
Ive had some mild bloating, some abnormal bleeding and some pelvic pain but I assumed at 5m postpartum it was just things settling down.

Im going to ring the Gp tomorrow but in the mean time has anyone else had anything like this and not had cancer. I can’t see what else it can be! I’m 30, my close relative died at 33 from cervical cancer that had spread so it’s making my mind race even more.

On another note. Is there any way I can get a referral to a gyno without having to have my GP rummage around up there. She’s not a very nice person and makes me feel really uncomfortable 🙁 I live very rurally and there’s not much choice other than her! Would a GP consider a referral without actually seeing (or feeling!) the problem?

Sorry you're so stressed.

I had a lump thing on my cervix, I have forgotten what it's called but it was just a nodule. Non-cancerous. Non-threatening.

It was diagnosed via a colposcopy.

Hopefully it's nothing to worry about. It's even worse for you if you feel uncomfortable with your GP. Hope all goes well tomorrow. Could you ask for a nurse chaperone?

Hugasauras · 25/04/2022 19:25

It could be lots of things that aren't cancer! Cysts and polyps are common, fibroids. Polyps particularly are quite common in women who have given birth.

Ithinkimightbebroken · 25/04/2022 19:33

Thankyou both of you!
I have googled lumps on cervix which was the worst mistake as all it’s shown up is negativity.

I really hope it’s nothing, I’ve got a young child and a baby 😣

My Gp is very dismissive. I had to fight for a referral to the breast clinic a few years ago because she wanted me to monitor my lump. It was just a cyst in the end but it was awful poking it every day for weeks and wondering. I hope the same does not happen this time.

@Ithinkimightbebroken polyp! That's what it was.

  1. Turn off Dr Google.
  2. Write down what you want to say to your GP. I have found since being more assertive and telling the GP what I want, I usually get it.
  3. Say it is affecting your quality of life (if it's making you this anxious it is).
  4. Remind of family history.
  5. Write down what you want to say.
  6. Ask for chaperone or partner/friend to attend with you.

I had a hard lump on mine saw gp and ahe diagnosed it as a nabolion cyst. Completely benign.

caringcarer · 25/04/2022 19:51

My sister found a small lump on cervix. It was a polyp. She had it removed and no problem since. They tested it after removal and Mon cancerous. Get it checked out. She was sent for a camera to investigate. In and out of hospital same day.

Ithinkimightbebroken · 25/04/2022 20:09

Thanks everyone, I’ve had a little cry but hopefully I can get an appointment as soon as possible and get some answers!

I had a lump on my cervix too @Ithinkimightbebroken, I had surgery last year to remove it. It was a cyst, blood filled, large and pretty solid. Nothing sinister at all.

scochran · 25/04/2022 20:16

I had this kind of stuff terrify me last year. Dring smear the nurse said I had a polyp, not urgent but get it seen. Gynaecologist said it's not a polyp you need operation and biopsy, that came back unclear but pointed to stage 1 cancer. Another operation removed more for biopsy and 2 weeks later so relieved all clear. Then intermittent bleeding so they had another rummage around and biopsy and that turned out to be a polyp. Just to show there's all kinds going on.
Have you had a recent smear?

Ithinkimightbebroken · 25/04/2022 20:49

@scochran no I haven’t. I think it must have been around 3 years ago since my last one.
I had a baby 5 months ago and nobody mentioned anything then during the various exams I had.

How long does a referral to a gyno take usually?

OP posts:
TheGlitterati · 25/04/2022 20:55

I’ve always had one. It’s very small, smooth and hard.

Sausagerollfiend · 25/04/2022 21:14

I had the coil fitted last year and when I started checking the threads, I became quite familiar with my cervix lol. I found a small lump, panicked, googled and then panicked some more. I decided to monitor it until my check up. It actually changed in size (got smaller) and gradually disappeared after a week. I havent checked my cervix since I had the coil removed so can't say whether it came back. But I just wanted to try and help put your mind at ease that it happens for no sinister reason sometimes. Good luck with your gp call.

scochran · 26/04/2022 05:02

I think if gp thinks it may be dangerous it would be the 2 week referral. Sounds like you could do with a icer gp though. Makes a big difference

Ithinkimightbebroken · 26/04/2022 16:20

I managed to get an appointment and discussed the problem.
No further forward as my Gp wouldn’t examine me without a chaperone so they have made me another appointment for just over a week.
Stressful!

felulageller · 26/04/2022 17:16

You can get a private gyn appointment. Look up your nearest private hospital/practice.

Ithinkimightbebroken · 26/04/2022 18:25

@felulageller I have found a few however none of them have any pricing information.
Im on maternity and money is tight 🙁

MrsMingech · 26/04/2022 18:45

You need to book a smear test ASAP.

Ithinkimightbebroken · 26/04/2022 18:54

@MrsMingech fitting name 😂

I can’t book a smear without a letter. I last had one the end of 2019 so won’t be due until the end of 2022!

OP posts:
ofwarren · 26/04/2022 19:02

I have one and mines nothing. Had it years.
I have yearly smears/colposcopy due to HPV and they have a good look.

polkadotpixie · 26/04/2022 21:34

I had exactly the same when TTC and checking my cervix, it was a hard jagged lump and I totally shit myself (I think you'd probably find the thread I started if you searched my username)

Despite feeling like a hard jagged lump, it was in fact a nabothian cyst, totally harmless

As you're only 5 months post partum, it could also be scar tissue from the birth, try not to worry too much (easier said than done I know)

pbdr · 26/04/2022 21:49

I'm a GP and I do coils so encounter lots of cervixes. I would say the most common cause for firm lumpiness of the cervix is nabothian cysts, I've seen loads of those. Of course it is essential that you get this checked to make sure it is nothing more serious but there is a very good chance that this will turn out to just be something innocent so try not to be too panicked in the meantime.

MrsMingech · 27/04/2022 09:30

Oh good so that must have been clear?

I actually pressed send too soon last night, I didn't mean to give an "A&E NOW!" Type of response which I essentially did end up doing.

What I wanted to add to that, is that I also had a lump on my cervix shortly after I had baby number 2. I got it checked out and the person who checked it also offered to cut it off. She said I wouldn't feel a thing, I didn't believe her so I declined.
it disappeared by itself, another one came back a few years later, but neither the GP nor the nurses during the several smears I've had since can see it. I can just feel it.

my smears come back fine so I try not to worry now.

i wouldn't say mine is particularly smooth either it's about the size of a pea.

Ithinkimightbebroken · 27/04/2022 12:23

Thankyou @MrsMingech I feel a little better after hearing others experiences. @pbdr I really hope that is what it is. My GP won’t examine me until next week so I’ll just bite my nails until then and hope for the best!

They won't refer without seeing you.
You could see a private gp within a private hospital who will refer you.
