How to Test Negative Lateral Flow

DH and I are due to fly to New York in a couple of weeks, and for entry to the US a negative covid test is required (regardless of vaccination status) the test can be an antigen lateral flow. Obviously it is really important we both test negative, so I was hoping for any advice on things to do/not to do so we can avoid any false positives - far example I understand citrus fruit can cause a false positive so is best avoided, but I even read drinking tap water could cause issues?!!

I think you’re overthinking it. I’ve tested loads for work, the only hint of a positive I’ve ever had was when I actually had Covid.

Hellocatshome · 25/04/2022 14:29

Its really not usual to get a false positive. I would just make sure you wait at least 45 mins after eating or drinking before you take the test so ot can't possibly be contaminated with anything you have eaten.

ComtesseDeSpair · 25/04/2022 14:31

If you’re doing one of the telehealth consultations, keep an unused vial of fluid off screen and swap it out with the vial you put the swab into for dripping it onto the cartridge.

There’s no way on earth I’d be collaborating with this utter performance theatre at this stage and putting my trip at risk.

Depends if you really want to know if you have covid or you want to return a negative result whatever.

is it supervised?

SummaLuvin · 25/04/2022 14:34

oops, overthinking is my MO, thanks for the advice and reassurance. This is my first 'high stakes' testing situation and it is making new nervous. But good to know that just be sensible and there is nothing to worry about.

I did an experiment when DS had it. Swabbed just the very bottom of his nostrils - still a massive positive.

swabbed his cheek - negative.

I don't want to trick the system, if I genuinely have it I would want to know. But I don't want to do something stupid and avoidable, like drinking a glass of orange juice, and jeopardise the trip.

Yes, the test has to be supervised.

If you just want an acurate test, don't eat or drink (or brush your teeth) for at least 30 mins before the test.

TinaYouFatLard · 25/04/2022 15:01

Do an online video consultation so you administer the test yourself. There are rumours that the one day test will end in May - let’s hope so!

SummaLuvin · 25/04/2022 15:09

@TinaYouFatLard I am praying the test will be gone by then, but also preparing myself for the probability they won't.

You’re massively over thinking. I do three each week and have never had a false positive. Follow the instructions when you do the test and in the meantime be sensible about limiting your contacts, masks, hand hygiene, etc.
