Rice flour it seems to be in everything now!

Has anyone else noticed this? I am intolerant to it and it's creeping in everywhere . I even accidentally ate some dates with it on. The ingredients were dates and rice flour. Can't fathom why they needed rice flour.

Does it replace something else as it seems to be a recent thing? It's in cereals, cakes biscuits all breaded food that I've found so far. It's in soups, and now found it on pre cut dates.

I imagine manufacturers are anticipating significant price rises to wheat given that so much is produced in Ukraine/Russia and are sourcing alternatives to replace or bulk out wheat flour. I think the price of wheat has been rising even befor the war due to some poor harvests.

That must be why then. Looks like I'm going to have to cook a lot more from scratch and maybe give up cake

Rice flour is gluten-free I think .

I'd have thought that was more likely to be the reason why it's now becoming more common (though obviously not if the biscuits/cakes/whatever are also using wheat flour).

I imagine there will be many, many more people who can't have gluten and/or wheat than those who can't have rice flour.

Sorry OP, I understand it's a complete pain when you have to check every single item.

Coeliac disease / gluten free... It's a blessing for us and hope more rice flour is used in place of wheat flour, it's so helpful.

@JanePrentiss I suppose I get to take off where you left off 😁 it's awful news for me!

Can't fathom why they needed rice flour.

Probably to stop them sticking together too much.

Yes! Another intolerant person. I’m having to check every single thing. It used to be fairly standard things like crisps or anything obviously marked Gluten Free, but I’ve been caught out by some of the most bizarre things recently between rice flour and rice syrup (packet ham, vegan mayo, and chocolate most recently!).

I think it’s a combo of it being gluten free, and also much cheaper as a thickener than wheat or equivalents.
