Simple pleasures in a new home

Having recently moved, I am still ridiculously chuffed every time I go to wash my dishes and use my pully out tap and the extra bowl (no idea of the names for these)

Also the masses of cupboard space I now have, as well as under sink drawers in the bathroom, and a pan drawer!

My new place is not fancy by any stretch of the imagination, and tiny compared to some of what we see on here. The extra space is the biggest but most obvious bonus, but it's these little things that probably wouldn't have influenced my decision to buy (apart from the cupboards perhaps) which now make life so much easier!

What's yours?

We're moving soon and I'm looking forward to having a dishwasher! We've had 2 homes since being together 8 years ago and never had room for one

Downstairs toilet , mine is really roomy , i have gorgeous wallpaper and a shelf with lovely things , didn't cost much to decorate but going for a pee gives me great pleasure!

Although I love my new kitchen, and it's more than double the size of my last, a dishwasher wouldn't work in the current layout, so your future dishwasher trumps my fancy tap

We just moved and we are more set back from the road, so we are going to plant wildflowers and have already planted a hedge. Mine is also not a big house but definitely big enough and we have come from somewhere genuinely small.

Something else I love is the birdsong outside - I have moved about 1.5 miles further from the centre of town and it sounds completely different.

I have much more worktop space and their oven is better than my old one so my cooking is better here too.

Enjoy your new home!

Extra space, very light, sunny kitchen, garden seat in the sun, very little traffic, no raucous neighbours,

bliss

resuwen · 24/04/2022 17:21

En suite. I know that Mumsnet is divided on this one, but I'm getting to the age where I have l to pee several times in the night and not having to leave the room in bliss!
My new house backs onto woodland, and the number of birds in the garden is a frequent delight.

When we moved - after being stuck in a 2-bed flat with 2 kids for 3 years longer than we planned due to one or other of us losing a job every time we were ready to move - I remember thinking 'Oh my God, I'm at home in one place and the kids are in a totally different part of the house'. Not having a bike taking up space in the hall once we got a bike storage shed. Also getting away from our upstairs neighbours/freeholders who'd put us through hell when we wanted to do some building work.

TheOldRazzleDazzle · 24/04/2022 17:27

Having a drive and garage - amazing.

Having a front ‘garden’ (not much of one with the drive, but a lot better than our straight-on-to-the-street house.) Looks lovely this time of year and makes the house inviting. We had a single pot by the front step before.

And, yes, storage space. It’s not a huge house, but it has loads of cupboards, in-built shelves and - the best - a cellar.

ilovemyelectriccar · 24/04/2022 17:28

En suite definitely. Just finished renovating/redecorating after moving in 4 years ago. It was only supposed to take 1 year but it took longer then Covid! Simple pleasures? Single mixer taps right through, knocked through kitchen diner and useable conservatory - replaced polycarbonate roof with solid and fitted heat pump for heating/cooling. Oh and muted, plain coloured walls. I hated with a passion the glittery grey flowery pattern in the lounge which had been put on upside down!! I was SO glad to lose that.

idontknowdoi · 24/04/2022 17:31

Same here @carefullycourageous I'm still on a street which is all flats, so there are a lot of parked cars, but very little traffic. The shops and things at my last place meant the traffic was pretty constant and parking was an absolute nightmare. It was always busy with people too, and no end of sirens up and down it every day.

Enjoy your new home too!

And yes @MintJulia my new neighbours are clean, considerate and just neighbourly, unlike a fair few of my last ones.

We went from no parking to parking for several cars. I love the fact i don’t have to worry about finding a spot on the street every day , and that friends and family can visit and park easily on our drive.

Off road parking becomes critical when you don’t have it and need to battle to find a space and also worry about your car getting damaged as it’s parked on the road.

We recently moved and a few days in noticed a small panel with buttons in the corner of the bathroom, it turned out to be controls for a lovely heated floor in there. Also have the pull out hose in the kitchen which is great.

I did put UFH in my last bathroom, and although I rarely used it, it was nice to have the option.

Literally the only physical/practical thing I miss about that flat 😆

Oh I love the pull out hose in the kitchen. It's so much fun cleaning the sink now!

Bloodybridget · 24/04/2022 22:13

We've been in this house for 20 years; before that I lived in a flat with a balcony which I loved, but had to edge out sideways with a watering can - it was full of plants in pots and troughs. There's a photo of me, a few days after we moved in here, sitting on the ground in the garden, washing out some pots, looking entirely contented.

WhatICallMyUsername · 24/04/2022 22:23

Dishwasher, downstairs loo and en-suite. Always wanted a downstairs loo so I don't have to tidy upstairs for visitors but genuinely never envisioned the other two would make such a difference.

One of my greatest joys is telling DS1 to bugger off to another loo when he decides he needs a shit whilst I am having a bath!

FGSWhatNow · 24/04/2022 22:34

Having a greenhouse. It was partially covered with vegetation when we moved in last summer, and I slowly uncovered it and cleared it out over the winter. It seems to be held together with moss, and I had to clear layers of algae off the glass. It's now full of seedlings and tomato plants, and I go out there with a mug of tea each morning and evening and potter... watering, potting on seedlings, sewing new seeds, listening to the birds and the rustling of the trees, plotting where the plants will go when they're big enough... It's soooo good for the soul. A little haven.

I am sure kids would find them too much fun Grin

I think they look great though!

Utility room . I also give my detached house a hug and a kiss, having moved from a scum saturated terrace.

WhatIcallmyusername
Thank you for the early morning laugh! I would love two bathrooms, even an en suite so long as it is not squashed in.

I like the sun in our south facing garden.
I like our driveway.

I would love:
At least double our square foot (under 1000)
Dcs to be able to fit double beds in their room, with space for a desk
Two reception rooms
Downstairs wc
Wide hallway
