Recommended Appetite Suppressants

Can anyone recommend an appetite supesssant please? I don't mean like a dodgy amphetamine based one or anything, just something that you can buy legitimately that actually helps? I really need to tackle weight gain but need something to take the edge off so it doesn't feel so hard!

You want to start your meal with protein so you don’t spike your blood sugar. Apple cider vinegar is supposed to help with this too. Lots of water as well.
chromium and cinnamon tablets are also supposed to help

whoturnedthesunoff · 24/04/2022 12:40

This is probably not what you want to hear - but water is the best thing I've ever done to make me feel full
I have an 800ml bottle , I fill it AM and try to have it drank by 1100 , refill finish it by 1400 again and finish by 1800 , you will pee lots at the beginning , skin improves , more brain clarity and I definitely feel fuller in between meals , helps bowels keep moving too

Otherwise I'm sure Holland and Barrett will have something,

Give it a try ?

Iamthewombat · 24/04/2022 12:50

The best way to moderate appetite is to eat plenty of protein, as a PP recommends, and to stay away from the sweet stuff, which messes with your hunger signals

skippymcskippy · 24/04/2022 12:57

Don't suppress your appetite, just change the things you eat.

Bin the processed food and sugars, and snack as much as you want on veg, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, grapes etc.

Your first few weeks will be hardest but you'll get used to it.

PattySlapper · 24/04/2022 14:04

Thanks everyone for the advice and well wishes. I will do those things, definitely drinks loads of water and concentrate on protein. I lost nearly 3 stone last year after the last lockdown and will eat like that again but when I've tried to get back on track recently have still felt the horrendous hunger and fallen off the wagon. I didn't really feel hunger like it when I did it last year.

So if anyone does have any information on appetite suppressants that work I would still appreciate it 😊 There are loads at H&B and online but some are quite expensive and would be great to have some experiences before I commit.

There are lots of saxenda threads if you search

hihellohihello · 24/04/2022 14:16

I find a good distraction really works. Sport and exercise, an unputdownable book, series you want to binge, going for a walk and getting outside, jobs where you get dirty so you cannot eat at the same time, baths and showers, driving or cycling somewhere. Just schedule and fill all your free time between meals.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 24/04/2022 14:18

Boom bod is great. And has lots of extra minerals in etc that makes me feel so much better. Really takes the edge off and stops me snacking. And usually buy one get one for a penny in Holland and Barrett

SD1978 · 24/04/2022 14:23

Ozempic- much cheaper than saxenda, and a weekly subcut injection.

FinallyHere · 24/04/2022 14:24

Another vote for water. I drink two litres before I eat anything each day.

That urgency you feel, where you feel you have to eat entirely disappeared after a few days eating low carb. A few days wanting to eat all the pies was for me worth it to stop my addiction to sugar and processed carbs.

You would be very welcome over in the low carb bootcamp threads. Lots of information and support.

PattySlapper · 24/04/2022 14:43

Thanks everyone, a lot to think about. I am intrigued by Saxenda or similar but also a bit scared of the potential side effects, cost and doing an injection! @SD1978 have you used Ozempic? It looks to be about £140 a month, does that sound right or can it be cheaper?

Interestingly someone on a Saxenda thread said it helps with sugar cravings but not the 'empty' hunger as much and that they also take glucomannan for the emptiness so going to look into maybe trying just that or maybe Boom Bod, but bearing in mind these weight loss injections if really can't get a handle on things

Black coffee is a great appetite suppressant.
Luckily i have 3 young kids so I actually need the caffeine hit as well.

Also just fill up on water.

I do IF and don't break my fast until 1pm but am usually awake from 6-7 with the children. During that time I have at least 2 coffees and 2 big glasses of water.

(Also im not some super duper fasting machjne i'm over 18st and on my own weight loss journey and this is what works for me. I lost 7st in a year doing this but then covid and a newborn ... you know the story and here i am again)

Good luck

I meant to add to that picture that the longer you can delay the metabolism firing up the better. As soon as i eat (or even have milk in the coffee) my body is suddenly hungry as ive given it a food source and it wants more and that's when i start to feel the need to eat and have cravings

Sorry i have no recommendations of actual supplements or anything but coffee works for me

Flowers111 · 24/04/2022 14:55

Would you consider starting with a 24 hour fast ?
It helps a bit to get into the mindset of not eating on demand. For me hunger was a distant memory until I fasted for a day. If you do it on a weekend or a day off work you can sleep through a lot of it then the last few hours are the only tough part.
I'm not disciplined enough for IF so doing it sometimes is better than having to tell anyone.

MagratsDanglyCharms21 · 24/04/2022 15:19

I've been using the 'Bodyline' Clinic. They have actual clinics you can go to and be physically checked and prescribed medication. They also have online consulations for this. Approx £100 per month - two types of meds. Off the top of my head you have to have a BMI of at least 28 before they will prescribe. I was literally just at 28. I have lost 1.5 stone without any issue since January (which considering some of the stuff going on in my personal life is a miracle really!). I would use them again.

thebeespyjamas · 24/04/2022 16:22

I can't, no. But what if you filled up with smoothies at the beginning of the day and that way you would be filling up with nothing but healthy stuff and it might stop you eating bad stuff?

edwinbear · 24/04/2022 16:33

I started Exante on Friday, I've bought 2 weeks of 'food' for £45. I use the term food in the loosest possible sense as it's a meal replacement plan where you have shakes/protein bars/soups instead of proper meals. I love my food (hence needing to shift a bit of weight before the summer) but I'm surprisingly not hungry on it and reckon I can stick with it for 2 weeks which should be sufficient to shift the 7-8lbs I'd like to lose.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 24/04/2022 18:10

But what if you filled up with smoothies at the beginning of the day and that way you would be filling up with nothing but healthy stuff and it might stop you eating bad stuff?

I imagine you’d spike your blood sugar and have a crash a few hours later, and crave sugar/carbs. Unless the smoothie was spinach, broccoli etc, in which case you’d do better to eat the actual vegetables imo - takes longer to digest and makes you feel fuller.

FinallyHere · 24/04/2022 22:18

Gillian Riley's approach to eatingless.com treats overeating as an addiction which can be overcome. Training the kind rather than physically restricting the body.

PattySlapper · 25/04/2022 19:57

Thanks so much for all the replies, it's given me loads to think about and look into. Started today, lots of water, started the day with eggs. Ordered some glucomannan to try but it didn't come until later today so had a dose but not sure yet it made any difference.

Let us know how you get on Patty .

chubb As soon as i eat (or even have milk in the coffee) my body is suddenly hungry as ive given it a food source and it wants more and that's when i start to feel the need to eat and have cravings
that's so interesting - I'm exactly like that .

ParisHarris · 26/04/2022 11:12

It's a bit of a MN cliche but have you read Why We Eat (Too Much)? I found it completely eye-opening re understanding the causes of hunger pangs and how to eat in a way that works with your metabolism rather than against it.
