Anyone got any idea about what’s making me so itchy

It’s driving me mad! About 2 weeks ago my body started really itching. It’s all over, even my scalp. It’s so painful it feels like my body is on fire and I’ve been scratching it so badly it’s red raw and bleeding in some places. I haven’t used any new products recently. No bedbugs, the dog hasn’t got fleas, no mosquito bites. There’s no bites or bumps, it’s just really itchy.

I’ve tried aloe Vera, eczema creams, moisturiser etc. They all soothe it for a bit but don’t get rid of it completely. Pharmacist recommended a daily antihistamine, but I take one anyway for hay fever. My GP didn’t really have any ideas either. I’ve noticed it seems to be more itchy in the evenings, but not just when I’m in bed so I don’t think it’s something in a certain room that causes it, as it happens when I’m out too. Nobody else in the house is experiencing it, just me. Hoping someone might have some ideas as I really need some relief!

Diabetics, liver,

That would seem logical, unless you buy more expensive stuff, weleda is good

I am anaemic and I know my iron levels are low when I get really itchy skin, especially at night. Even antihistamines don't help. Have you had your iron levels checked @itsneilthebaby ?

Have you tried using a heavy duty emollient cream like E45 or Oilatum?

loopylindi · 24/04/2022 16:49

I've found a product on line called Emuaid. On reading about it I thought it sounded like snake oil, and as it's expensive I baulked at buying any. However, my itching got so bad I would have ripped my skin off for relief, so I bit the bullet and bought some. It's like magic! for me, it stops the itching and healing has started, though I know that will take a while. Coconut oil is also supposed to be good.

Thank you for all the replies everyone, lots of information to have a look at

To answer a few questions -
Definitely not pregnant
Definitely not postpartum
It is an itchy feeling, the burning only starts after I've started scratching it

I had eczema as a child but haven't had anything like that for about 15 years now
I didn't realise so many things could cause it and that bloods would need doing. I've tried to get in touch with my GP again today, just waiting for them to get back to me

This is something I also experience. I describe it as an insane itch so intense it would stop me in the midst of my day/ work for example it would prevent me from driving. It started last Sept lasted 5 days, nothing worked, tried antihistamines, the recommended topical creams etc. Wondered if it was an allergy. I've realised since that it is hormone related it happens every month with my other pmt symptoms. Now lasting only a day or so thankfully. I got the mirena coil inserted last summer and wonder if it's all related.

May I suggest the horror that is tree pollen allergy? Last 2 weeks have been awful.

Anti histamine don't make a dent in mine unless they are prescription strength which my surgery won't give me any more (and I struggle with anyway as even non drowsy ones make me drowsy). No rash but a lot of itching especially in places with thin skin (yes I get an itchy Nancy).

It's a new allergy - last 4/5 years and I'm mid 40s. When it first came on it wasn't obvious and I had blood tests, creams and things. It look my dad basically rubbing my arm with blossom for me to realise what it was.

Can I ask if your lips (facial to clarify after that bombshell Grin) itch?

Mine have been driving me crazy for the past few weeks. I was allergic to tree pollen as a child but grew out of it (or perhaps not, as the case may be).

another poster mentioned too much vitamin d, and I do take a supplement daily, but forgot it while we were away at the beginning of the month and they were better. Not perfect but better. Now I’m back taking it from my chin to my nostrils itch :(

Lenor have changed their ingredients.

WaspStingsAreAwful · 25/04/2022 19:48

Good that you are having it checked out by GP. That's the first step to rule out any medical issues as touched on above.

If bloods come back clear, then you can try some of the products mentioned above. Best of luck, it must be awful.

itsneilthebaby · 29/04/2022 08:26

@Marmite27 haha yes they do. Everything, even my fingers and the bottoms of my feet! I don't take any vitamin D supplements, although I probably should

Had some bloods done yesterday so now just waiting to see if they show anything

Just searched as I have similar symptoms and wondered if you got to the bottom of it OP?

Figgysmum · 23/02/2023 21:02

I have discovered eating sugar causes me to itch all over. It took ages to work out what it was. I’m fine if I don’t have it but as soon as I eat it I’m driven insane with itching

Cookie1234567 · 21/01/2025 18:46

Can I ask how this turned out please? I’m having the same

itsneilthebaby · 22/01/2025 08:10

I never really got to the bottom of it tbh. My blood tests all came back normal and after about another week or two it just stopped completely and I've never had it again since

Thank you so much for replying. How long did it last in total? Were you post partum or breastfeeding? I’m panicking as it’s been 3 weeks for me now
