Council tax advice! I'm young and dumb!

Hello. So long story short, I applied for council tax reduction on top of the 25 percent you receive for being a single person and was awarded it. But the letter is no help in terms of what that means going forward. How much will I have to pay less and also they said they have backdated it. Do I get a payment or will they take it off my bill?
Sorry! I haven't lived alone for long and I'm struggling to understand. Thanks guys x

That letter is about discretionary housing payments not council tax support, and it's fairly self explanatory - you need to provide them with the information they're asking for!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 22/04/2022 17:23

The letter you’ve attached has nothing to do with the single persons discount.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 22/04/2022 17:24

Not sure if you've attached the right image as that one just says they need more info from you before they can process your claim, so at the moment nothing is agreed.

They probably can’t tell you that until you have provided them with the documents and information they need to be able to process the claim.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 22/04/2022 17:25

the letter doesn’t say you’ve been awarded the discount. You need to provide the extra info requested within one month of the date of the letter

ThreeLittleDots · 22/04/2022 17:25

They haven't given you any discount according to that letter. You need to give them the evidence they need before they look into it and decide.

MayorDusty · 22/04/2022 17:41

As PP said, is that the wrong letter because that's a different thing to CT reduction.
Did you do the application yourself or is an advisor helping?

Candyflossarmpits · 22/04/2022 17:42

Sorry!! This is the letter I meant to attach!!

Hi op. I'm a benefit/Council Tax advisor. That is the CTS notification which should tell you how much you have been awarded per week. You will also receive a new bill which will show your new payments due. The CTS will be taken off your bill. . Make sure you provide the evidence for your DHP claim also.

chisanunian · 22/04/2022 17:51

They should send you a revised council tax bill for the year which shows the reduction in the amount due, and they will also recalculate your monthly payments. If you don't get it soon, contact the council tax department and ask.

NoWittyNamesAvailable · 22/04/2022 17:51

Are you able to view your council tax bill online? Would it not show on there what you are required to pay? Im in Wales, and ours shows how much it is before and then after reductions.

MayorDusty · 22/04/2022 17:56

As said above you will get another letter showing the reduction and telling you how much you are liable for. As soon as you get that you can tell discretionary housing the figures and see if they can help with that.

Also, don't feel dumb having to apply to three separate bodies for help isn't obvious or straightforward, good luck.

Candyflossarmpits · 22/04/2022 18:06

Ahh thank you all so much. I will await the new bill and try to set up an online account.
Struggling with kidney failure at the moment so trying to get all the financial help I can as I'm unable to work my usual hours. Also thanks to everyone for not judging me 🙂

If you are receiving UC check if you are eligible for any social tariffs for gas/electricity, water and broadband too.
sometimes they aren't well publicised or obvious.

Candyflossarmpits · 22/04/2022 18:15

Okay. I have found this in my online account which is dated the day after I got the letter saying I had been awarded CTR. Can someone help me understand this I'd appreciate it so much xx

It's blurry but if that final figure is -£23 then they owe you. It'll cost you that trying to ring for the refund but depending on your council and when/how they issue the extra £150 rebate it may be best to wait for that.
Now you need to do the discretionary housing for your rent only.

Ahhh okay. That's great news. I'm just wondering how long this means I won't pay for, that's what I'm unsure of. It's so annoying it's blurry for you guys because it's clear for me grrr. I have received that 150 rebate already.
And yes, don't the dhp financial things they asked for x

Which year is the bill for? If it's for 22/23 then it means you won't pay anything until April next year unless your CTS changes before then.

MayorDusty · 22/04/2022 18:37

Next year for CT so you've not to worry about that for a while.
Check your electricity supplier for the Warm Home Discount it may already be closed for this year but they will say when it's open again and you can set a reminder on your phone. (Ignore me if you've done it already)

Aah okay! So when they say it's backdated should I get the money back for what I've already paid since 15/12/21 when I moved in? I've paid them nearly 500 in council tax since then. And that's such a good idea, I think it has closed but I will look when it reopens x

CT goes from April to March so the reduction figure with no dates (-£206) could be your award for Dec-Mar 2021.
Which would put you in credit for this year which may have reduced this year's liability to £0.
Council tax reduction doesn't cover 100% of liability for my local council but I don't know if that's national.
Can you do an online query?
