Lifestyle or money saving changes you are making due to rise in energy cost

xsquared · 21/04/2022 19:43

Are you doing anything to save money to pay for the energy you use?

We are now paying double what we used to and I am seriously thinking about things we can do to save money.

So far, I have bought my own coffee into work in an insulated cup/thermos.

We are also considering getting rid of one of our many streaming services and I think the most obvious one to get rid of would be Spotify Premium, because at least I can still listen to it, but just with adverts.

Cutting back on take aways. We have one most weekends and after realising they're often disappointing/average and cost nearly £150 a month. I'm trying some new healthier and cheaper fake away recipes. Shopping at Aldi more than now and again. Aiming to not buy any new clothes for me and DH for one year, sorting our wardrobe and re finding things!

There are scores of these threads. If you do a search, you'll find lots of suggestions

@midsomermurderess What is your point? Should I not have started my thread then?

It's a public forum. I know that there have already been threads about money saving tips, but I would like to interact on a new thread, thank you.

No need to tell me what threads I should and shouldn't start. Anyway, do you want to contribute your ideas in what you are doing to save money in light of the rising energy costs?

I have managed to half our electric consumption. My son left home so obviously that saved some but pretty sure he wasn't responsible for half of the consumption. We have stopped using the tumble dryer /dishwasher completely and only use the oven once/twice a week . We use the air fryer loads instead . In other ways we have stopped impromptu meals out and will take a picnic instead, have bought some flasks instead of buying a hot choc whilst out.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/04/2022 20:19

I like reading these threads for ideas.

as it is ongoing situation where things will get worse, I hope people continue to start threads like these.

xsquared · 21/04/2022 20:23

Thank you @ThroughThickAndThin01 , I also think it's good to have recent discussion.

@pumpkinpie01 A lot of the time for me, it is the spending money on food when I'm at work, so I am also resolving to bring packed lunch more often.

Trying to use less gas and electricity, especially if you're currently tumble drying when you could line dry, not using eco cycles because they take longer, washing everything after one use, taking endless long showers and putting the heating on instead of a jumper would be one way of mitigating the increases.

Many Mumsnetters would have several options to reduce their usage rather than having to make cuts in other areas.

inmyslippers · 21/04/2022 20:24

Used a box dye instead of salon.

CornishGem1975 · 21/04/2022 20:26

Still on a fixed rate for the next 18 months, so nothing yet, though I am trying to make little savings where I can like not using the tumble dryer anymore, not doing half loads in the washing machine, heating was off weeks ago.

xsquared · 21/04/2022 20:27

@BarbaraofSeville We don't have a tumble dryer, so line drying it is whether that's outside or inside when it's raining.

Having ready the pyjamas thread, I've realised that I'm one of these scummy mners who don't wash their pyjamas or towels everyday.

The heating is now off. The water is only on once through the day. We’re out all day at work/school, so hot water is needed in the morning and evening. The once heats up enough for us.
TV is never on standby. We sweep the house before we leave for the day to make sure lights and electronics are switched off.
I get fed at work for lunch, so all good there and get tea and coffee.
I don’t make as many trips in the car as I used to either. I’m more organised so once I’m out, I’ll get everything I need.

sophienelisse · 21/04/2022 20:40

I'm buying some clothes airers for when my tariff ends at the end of July. The tumble dryer will not be being used.

Dreading when it gets cold.

We have turned our hot tub off. It will be too expensive to run when my tariff ends.

We have a hive already.

I'm already a bit stingy with the heating as if it's just me (I work from home) I just layer up. I only put the heating on for my Dd in the morning and for when she's home from school till she gets in bed.

I don't know what else I can do?

I cook mostly in the ninja which costs less than the oven.

I work on this industry so I do everything already that you should.

It's scary how much it's going to cost.

MissyCooperismyShero · 21/04/2022 20:47

Let our cleaner go, saved £120 per month there and halved our Virgin package, another £40 per month saved. But almost all of that £160 has gone on fuel increases

Brit box gone
switched phone provider
opted out of pension
dishwasher never using
screaming at my 4yr old every time she leaves a light on

Nsky62 · 21/04/2022 20:53

Opting out of pension unwise, never notice dishwasher costs, had it 4 years.
less washing, more slow cooking, heated airer when needed, oven on less

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 21/04/2022 20:55

Cancelled Netflix

Cancelled dd's swimming lessons (she's stage 5 so I think it's ok)

Reduced dog walkers hours so now DH does it some days

Joined the library rather than buying books

Cancelled my therapy Sad

I am aware that we are very privileged in having these things to cut in the first place though

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/04/2022 20:55

20o washes. Everything is perfectly clean and fresh, even on the quick settings.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/04/2022 20:57

I'm not sure that not using the dishwasher will save money as they use far less water than doing the same amount of washing up by hand, so even though electricity costs more than gas to heat water, you're using less so it might balance out.

Of course it’s unwise, so is getting into debt trying to survive month to month. Doubt I’ll be able to ever fucking retire anyway so quite honestly I couldn’t give a damn

Can't get away with that look for my face shape and age. 😕 I have bought myself box dye instead of visiting the hairdressers.

For the sake of the environment, I'm glad to see all the tumble dryers gone. I've never seen a point in one.
I'm not sure I can make more cuts. I already do a lot. I may not put the hot tub out this year but that'll deprive the kids of the very little fun they've been having lately. I'm already taking food and coffee to work, save bath water for the garden etc. I've been doing these for years for environmental reasons. I wish people didn't just care about money.

I never get these. Our clothes don't even come out clean at 40C.
