Dry robe for indoor swimming

I want something I can stick on after an indoor swim and drive ten minutes home in. The bit I hate about swimming is the struggle in the changing room and dropping clothes on to a dirty floor, not to mention the feeble showers.

Is there an equivalent for indoor swimming? I think if I could get out, stick it and leggings on and go home wet I'd be happy. The nice ones I've seen are very long and I'd feel a bit daft walking to the car.

Lots of swim club kids wear dryrobes for after indoor swimming and I’ve seen a few adults wearing them too. If it works for you go for it, it can’t be any weirder than the splashy men or the woman I saw last night in the pool with a full face of makeup and lipstick the exact shade of her purple swimsuit 😂

I saw someone do a full shop in Aldi last week in a dry robe so am sure dashing out to the car will be fine!

ImInStealthMode · 21/04/2022 19:41

A couple of swimmers at my gym arrive and leave in dry-robes and nobody gives them a second glance. That said, we're by the sea so they're a common sight in a lot of places Grin

HHa · 21/04/2022 19:42

I don't have much success with not flashing people in a dressing gown!

The coat ones or the towelling only ones?

Everyone round here has the coat ones. They're at the gym, in the supermarket, outside surfer bars, inside some surfer bars, on the high street...

HHa · 21/04/2022 22:56

I'm not sure sweaty post-menopausal woman in the height of summer, climbing out of the pool in a muggy sports centre into to a waterproof coat is a good look Grin

I'm so tempted by a coat though - I don't know why they seem so attractive.

Go for a thick hooded towel with a zip up pocket. Dry robes will be too hot and daffy to drive in. Plus do they just get all chloriney? Do you wash them? Also not good to drive in wet swimming costume, just whip it off under the towel

balalake · 22/04/2022 10:18

I know women who use them for sea swimming, why not for other swimming? As for the comment about a 'good look', given how about 95% of people in the UK dress, you'd not be alone.

CounsellorTroi · 22/04/2022 12:25

How about this? Been thinking of getting one myself.

WildCherryBlossom · 22/04/2022 21:31

I saw a bloke coming out of the swimming pool today in one.

lakeswimmer · 22/04/2022 21:35

A friend of mine drove home from swimming in her dressing gown recently and the car broke down...

A lot of people in my neck of the woods go wild swimming and it's pretty normal to see people wandering around in them.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 22/04/2022 22:08

I bought one for exactly this purpose and I used it today for the first time. I felt a bit embarrassed at first, but when I came out it was so wonderful to just zip it up and leave! I actually ended up taking my cossie off in the changing room so literally drove the ten minutes home in my Dryrobe and sandals. It was fine to drive in. I was almost dry when I got home, apart from my hair, but I got in the lovely hot bath that DH had just run for our DS's bedtime. So much nicer than the gross changing room.

I'm really pleased that I did it as I really love swimming and it just feels so much more pleasant this way.

CounsellorTroi · 22/04/2022 22:16

I always drive home from the gym wearing my towelling turban. Can’t be arsed drying my hair at the gym would rather do it in the comfort of my own home.

mindutopia · 22/04/2022 22:17

Swimmer here, the problem with dry robes is that they are quite hot. I personally find them a bit warm even outdoors in the winter. I would melt in one in a sticky changing room and in my car unless on a very cold day. In the summer, you could manage with a towering robe, but main issue is not waterproof so your car seat will get wet. Both of these issues seem much more annoying than just changing at the pool.

sickofthisnonsense · 22/04/2022 22:25

I have a dry robe for after my non swimming hobby.
I'll quite happily drive home in just that- been into Mc Donald's in it.

Seen them worn on wet camping days too.

They are fabulous

Arucanafeather · 22/04/2022 22:29

I’m the same - hate getting changed after swimming in the damp pool changing rooms. Also I like to bath after swimming rather than shower so I can soak for 10+ mins in my eczema soothing oilatum. I wear my dry robe (well, 2 bare feet equivalent) there and back. Didn’t think twice about it.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 22/04/2022 22:29

@mindutopia I think it probably depends on your natural thermostat. It's quite warm today but I didn't feel too hot driving home in mine at all. I do really feel the cold though.
