280k could buy a 3 bed with minimal mortgage for me, around 150 a month.

I know it’s personal choice at the end of the day but im mid thirties now, hipor I could borrow and buy up to 500k. I am on 65k and could afford repayments

i know it’s personal choice at the end of the day but im mid thirties and one side says go for the borrowing and the other says listen to everyone who says being practically mortgage free would be life changing.

the larger house is nicer but it’s actually not massively bigger, just better location and nicer environment. I also wonder if it’s a better way to spend money, as an investment. I don’t know.

what would you do?

not sure what happened there! On my phone!

that should say the alternative is borrowing to buy around 500k, bigger house and garden etc and nicer location. Repayments currently would be ok as ok salary.

We have recently downsized and have a much smaller mortgage (though not as small as yours would be) and it was literally life-changing - we now have a much better quality of life as we can both afford to work very part-time and can pursue career opportunities because they're interesting rather than having to choose the highest paid job every time. I would always choose a small mortgage over a bigger house with a big mortgage, if you can reasonably fit into the smaller house.

How many of you are living in the house?

Borrow and buy the nicer house- the repayments are small compared to your wage and for your age. I really don’t see the issue

Buy the cheaper house, invest the maximum allowed in your pension (you’ll pay less tax - win/win) and enjoy or save the extra money.

You have several other threads today about your situation with your pregnancy, your wish to move back to your home town and your DP's wish to stay put (and consequent need to live v close to his hospital, even 24 mins drive being too far)

I think you need to get that sorted out, and work out where you really want to be based, before working out your budget for when you know your really want for family life

BlueOverYellow · 21/04/2022 17:52

I'd buy the cheaper house, start saving more, and enjoy yourself.

Well, you know what the old saying says;

"Buy the most expensive house you can possibly afford and drive the cheapest car you can bear to drive"

If you want to be wealthy in the long term that is. If you want something else from life then you choose your priorities.

Perfectlystill · 21/04/2022 21:15

Buy the nicer house

Success with property is to go up the ladder in as few a rungs as possible!

This is all odd.
