How long does it take to be approved for a credit card

How long does it take to be approved for a credit card.

I applied online on Tuesday and gave all the details including passport, payslip and proof of address. The online application said I will get a response the next working day after the application so I presumed I would have got a response by the end of the work day yesterday but I didn't get an email.

I will keep an eye on my email account today to see if anything shows up. Hopefully today.

I have done it in literally minutes before, didnt have to provide all that info though

SummersBreeze · 21/04/2022 14:23

I logged in to view the progress and my application says
'our team is reviewing your documents'. It's been stuck on that sense Tuesday evening.

I presumed there would be an update at this stage.

I’ve never had to provide any proof of anything (had various card with Tesco, Barclaycard, MBNA, all sorts, I switch them regularly) and usually approved within minutes. Seems a long time to wait!

Mine have always been approved within minutes and I've never had to send all those docs. It was a legit application wasnt it?

Normally minutes...is this your first ever application? Do you have poor credit? If so, there are cards designed purely for building up your credit rating but they'll have high APRs.

Is a lot of documentation needed for first applications?

I want to build my credit rating, but have no ID and am on benefits (so no pay slips).

Looks like your application has been referred, usually happens when you have limited credit history or thinks don't match up e.g. different addresses, change of name etc. It means someone needs to manually look at your credit file so could be down to staff absences, a large backlog etc. As PPs have said, if you have a normal credit history, same address for 3 years plus, no recent name changes, electoral roll registration etc. most organisations approve instantly.

Maybe my credit rating is shot.

I used to an account on a clothing site - JD Williams. They allow you to buy on credit and pay back. I kept missing payments with them. Not on purpose or not that I couldn't pay. It was because I was getting caught up in work and a busy schedule and I would simply forget to pay or mix up payment dates.

This will be my first credit card.

@SummersBreeze You need to check your credit rating in that case - it would be a shame not to know what is going on in the background if you've not managed credit accounts well in the past. MSE have some good advice on hwo to do it for free:

Definitely check your credit rating. Don’t apply for further cards before you do otherwise you could damage your rating further. If there are any issues or errors in your credit background sort them out before trying again.

SummersBreeze · 21/04/2022 16:05

I filled out an application form online to check my credit rating. I was able to do it all online and provide all the relevant details.

How would applying for a card damage me further?

There were issues before with a company but I sorted those issues.

Applying for a credit card, and being turned down, can affect your credit rating.

crackingreward · 21/04/2022 16:12

Who did you apply with?

Did you do a pre check to see if you're likely to be approved before you applied? There are a few sites you can do this on so you don't apply for a card and get rejected

I actually did do a pre-check and I got an estimate of the credit limit I will likely be allowed. It said my credit limit will be 3000. I certainly won't be maxing this card out at all. I want the card for one high purchase of 760. My plan is to pay off 190 a week and have it paid off in a month.
