Any recommendations for family viewing on Netflix / prime / Disney?

We are struggling to find anything we can watch as a family atm. DH, me, ds age 11 and (sometimes) DS 14. We can all find things to watch individually, no problem, but something we will all enjoy… ideally something like Dr Who, or Indiana Jones / Jurassic Park (but a series), Malcolm in the Middle. So…

Adventure / Action / Mystery / Comedy
Not a lot of sex / swearing
Nothing too gory/ scary but a few jump scares is ok
Adults in the lead roles, not young children (teens ok).

We tried Lost in Space and found it a bit boring. We loved Malcolm in the Middle. We watched all the Marvel / Star Wars spin off series, enjoyed some of them (Loki, Hawkeye) disliked others (Boba Fett) but they are all too short / one offs.

We are currently working our way through back series of Dr Who but not sure where to go next.

any ideas ?

Buffy the vampire slayer
Timeless
Star Trek Next Generation
Possibly Locke & Key but it's rated 15 so possibly a bit too much for the 11yo

I have the Buffy box set and have tried it… was dismissed as too old-fashioned looking (it is quite dated looking these days) and too girly. Ditto Angel. 🤷‍♀️

Don’t know Timeless / Locke & Key will look them up.

Star Trek is definitely a possibility.

Sorry nothing helpful to add but I can’t believe they rejected Buffy & Angel tsk tsk. I have the box sets too and was hoping DD would watch them when she’s older. She’s only 3.5 though so they’ll be positively ancient when she’s old enough

@mowly77

i know ! I put Angel on Netflix while I was doing the ironing, DS was actually laughing at it ! though I confess it did look pretty clunky, especially the fight scenes. I leant my box set to a friend who really hoped her DD would like it but it was rejected out of hand as really old fashioned 🤦‍♀️.

I watched something good on Disney last week, its in French but managed to changed it to dubbed English. It’s called Parallels. Sci fi type show where two teens jump into a parallel universe. So in one reality two have gone missing and in the other reality the other two have gone missing. Well acted.

We’ve just finished watching around the world in 80 days on BBC iPlayer which might fit the bill? DS loved it! There’s also dark materials on there which might be a hit?

on Disney plus, you’ve got once upon a time which also might be worth trying

FrecklesMalone · 20/04/2022 07:08

Mine (11,14 and 16) will all watch Taskmaster on C4, Brooklyn 99, The IT crowd, Red Dwarf, Stranger Things (bit scary for me not them!) .

JuneOsborne · 20/04/2022 07:09

We're enjoying Kim's Convenience with kids a similar-ish age if you want comedy.

His Dark Materials on the iPlayer (but the lead character is 12).

We liked Raising Dion, but again a child is the main character and the same yet again with Sweet Tooth.

FrecklesMalone · 20/04/2022 07:09

Oh yes his Dark Materials was a hit and 80 days. Also Dodger

Lovelydovey · 20/04/2022 07:11

Mine are slightly younger (10 and 12) but we have the same dilemma. Currently watching Dodger on CBBC, which we are enjoying. We also enjoyed the Alex Rider series.

I did make them watch Malory Towers with me - but they hated that.

Doodledoop · 20/04/2022 07:16

Hi we have kids the same age and seem to have same tastes, also found Lost in Space boring.

Recently we've watched Alex Rider on prime, Round the world in 80 days on iplayer. Me and 11 year old watch Young Sheldon (Malcolm in Middle a favourite - but also done Modern Family and Everybody Hates Chris - love a US family sitcom).

Suprisingly Stranger Things is a 12 - I found first series frightening, but everyone except 11 yo watched it a couple of years ago.

fruitpastille · 20/04/2022 07:24

Marvel Agents of s.h.i.e.l.d has lots of seasons if you want something long running and v enjoyable.

Alex rider on prime is good.

Puppalicious · 20/04/2022 07:40

Kobra Kai. Agree with Stranger Things

workwoes123 · 20/04/2022 15:04

We’ve also enjoyed red dwarf, Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, anything Monty Python but have watched them so often we can all quote long passages ! DS even asked for the script books for Christmas so he could learn them 😂. We live abroad so consider this to be part of their cultural education .

Loved 80 Days ! We watched it twice in rapid succession.

Anything with teen heroes gets the bums rush - Alex Rider, Percy Jackson, his dark materials etc.

stranger things - DH, I and older DS have watched it, DS 11 still a bit young.

There used to be loads of “Saturday night tea time” family shows when I was young. I guess there’s more money in individual content on individual devices these days 🙄

Sweet tooth,
Ghosts,
Father Ted - yes dated but funny
Ridley Road
The Salisbury Poisonings
TWIN

GrouchyKiwi · 22/04/2022 18:36

Is Warehouse 13 on any platform these days? That's fun.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 22/04/2022 18:42

Merlin

The Musketeers

although I think both might be on iplayer which is no use to you if you live abroad…

feelinglowandblue · 22/04/2022 18:47

How about firefly? Jumanji, night at the museum movies, mrs doubtfire is my go to family movie!
