Filming someone in their window

If someone films someone looking out of their window of their house, is this legal?

(As I know that unbelievably apparently people can film you in your garden!!!! As a garden is apparently classed as a public place!!)

Care to elaborate? Our neighbour took pics of my dc from inside her house as I was outside. I told her to stop or I would report her for being a peadophile! Fury made me say it!

LIZS · 19/04/2022 20:02

Do you mean a fixed camera ie cctv or on a phone?

VyeBrator · 19/04/2022 20:03

If they can be seen by the public then yes, you can photograph them.

However, you're not allowed to peer in through their window and start taking photos.

Oh right 😞 Damn Can't believe this is all allowed!!

This link might help OP

VyeBrator · 19/04/2022 20:09

Why what's the problem?

I mean that was a basic answer to the photography question but if someone is deliberately causing harassment, there might be other laws to stop them.

LIZS · 19/04/2022 20:10

You cannot direct a fixed camera at a window though. If the range includes other properties it should be masked out with tape or blurred unless the owner gives permission.

FlickyCrumble · 19/04/2022 20:13

It seems people can take pics and film anyone they want. Even random children. If it causes harassment then the police might get involved but look at celebrities and how even they can’t stop the paparazzi.

They are causing harassment However apparently according to the police anyone can film in the garden!!! Cannot believe it!! To be fair they've told this person they're not interested in the videos as they seem to have realised they're taking revenge on us/bullying a child but these people are still doing it

I've read your other threads OP. Are they definitely doing this? No offence but you seem paranoid.

purpleme12 · 19/04/2022 20:26

God if only they weren't doing this. If only you were right and it was just me being paranoid
Unfortunately this is all true
I wish to god it wasn't

You have my sympathies. I am going through a similar situation with my neighbours who are filming me in my garden and they are harassing me. Police were utterly useless and yes, they said the same thing to me that they can film me in my garden!

It might be worth checking your home insurance and whether legal cover would cover this. My insurers have initially said they will cover it as it is related to the property/legal nuisance. So I will see how it goes :(

purpleme12 · 19/04/2022 20:50

I'll have a look
It's awfull isn't it!
It would be bad if it was me but they're targeting a child now!!!

ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/domestic-cctv-systems-guidance-for-people-being-filmed/ might be of interest to you. Do police know the subject is a minor, what is the footage being used for or shared to?

purpleme12 · 19/04/2022 21:09

Yes the police know
They are trying to 'gather evidence to claim she stares at them and they find her intimidating' she is an 8 year old girl who likes Peppa pig and paw patrol and baby Annabel
These people are the nastiest people I have met in all my life

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 19/04/2022 21:11

Because I went to the police over them harassing us they're trying to make up harassment claims against us including a child, the most shocking thing in all of this

Can you use those garden sails to give some privacy? They aren't expensive. Maybe attached to a frame up near the cameras?

purpleme12 · 19/04/2022 22:17

I'm confused what you mean by this?

OP posts:
Hawkins001 · 19/04/2022 22:23

@purpleme12

I'm confused what you mean by this?
Basically seems like the poster is recommending a way to block their view by using e.g. A fence, or if it's portable, a wind sail, which is basically a large blanket attached to some poles in the ground.
purpleme12 · 19/04/2022 22:26

It's really the upstairs window they're filming her from
(As well as outside)

OP posts:
LIZS · 19/04/2022 22:27

Can you apply reflective window film to the glass or voile panels?

purpleme12 · 19/04/2022 22:30

Oh ok that's interesting the reflecting window film what would they see in the window if we had that on?
Would we still see out?

OP posts:
redastherose · 19/04/2022 22:38

Yes the reflective film stops outsiders looking in (easily anyway) but you can still see through it although it does make rooms a bit darker inside.

LIZS · 19/04/2022 22:42

Think you can get one way film which is reflective to outside or use a variant of frosted film to cover the lower part of the window up to her height. It comes with clear stripes, squares, patterns etc to allow some light through but would make filming her difficult. Have a look in Wilko or b and q. Alternatively a day/night blind might work similarly.

purpleme12 · 19/04/2022 22:43

Oh ok brilliant I think I'll have a look at this
