Laptop not charging

BenefitsTimingHelp · 19/04/2022 19:08

Bought it just last year. Been working absolutely fine until now, went to use it today and I’ve less than 20% charge left on it and it will not charge up.

I have tried -

Checking it’s all connected up properly

Different power outlets which I know are working as other things running off them ok inc other tech

I’ve run various troubleshooters and power reboots and uninstalling and reinstalling the battery drive etc as per manufacturers tips but they aren’t open for me to contact them just now.

Spoke to retailer with whom I do have a care plan but they won’t discuss what the problem might be just simply book it in for a repair which means they have to collect it from me keep it for goodness knows how long prob not fix and charge me for the privilege.

I’m really hoping someone on here can advise

I’m hoping it’s “just” the charger cable which I THINk I can fairly cheaply get a replacement for off Amazon BUT I would appreciate guidance on this to ensure I get the right one and not one that’ll blow it up or something!

The laptop is an Asus zenbook ux325

Anyone with any experience or tech know how who can help?

This is driving me nuts!

Quickie : if the battery is removable, do that , and just run the laptop off the mains?

BenefitsTimingHelp · 19/04/2022 19:20

Far as I can tell battery not removable and quite honestly I would not feel confident doing so

Is it registering the charger at all? Have you got something in the charger port?

Fuse in the charger plug?

When it’s plugged in does it show power or just battery?

If you’re not getting the power light or the icon only shows battery mode then I would blame the charger

If it’s showing the power light or the ‘charging’ icon but not actually charging the battery then I would blame the battery

Aberration · 19/04/2022 19:35

sometimes batteries get static and you have to take them out and shake them

Tomikka · 19/04/2022 19:43

The battery for that zenbook can be replaced, but does involve opening up as opposed to some others where it can be unclipped

They can be replaced by a reasonably competent person, but if you have a support plan it could be voided by someone else changing the battery

Was it bought as new or as refurbished / second hand? If new then under a year is not reasonable for a battery, but if the charger cable is showing wear etc then that would be a possible cause for early charger failure

(I would advise thinking about your support plan, they are often an add on at the till - if you’re wary of using it then it’s not worth paying for the support plan)

BenefitsTimingHelp · 19/04/2022 19:45

It’s not registering the charger at all. Could be the fuse in the plug I’ve no screwdrivers nor a spare fuse to check that I’ll try and get that sorted handy to have anyway.

There’s no light comes on anywhere anyway just the little lightning bolt charger icon in the battery icon

Can’t take the battery out wouldn’t be at all confident doing that and think it would invalidate the care plan I have on the thing - don’t want to give them the excuse to not fix or replace it if there’s a major issue

OP posts:
BenefitsTimingHelp · 19/04/2022 19:47

Bought new support plan bought at same time, I would definitely use it for an obvious major problem but when with this is may be the fuse in the plug or the charger cable which I think is easily replaced? Then it’s more hassle than it’s worth! I can buy a fuse/charger cable relatively quickly and cheaply rather than be without laptop for several days!

It looks as if it's a usb-c type charger connection? It's a flat oval little connector thing that connects to a square solid heavy thing which then connects to a Normal plug

Does that make sense to people?

OP posts:
Justkeeppedaling · 19/04/2022 19:53

Have you tried it in a different socket? Or checked other things in the socket you're using to be sure it's not that?

BenefitsTimingHelp · 19/04/2022 20:16

Yes I've checked sockets see op -

Different power outlets which I know are working as other things running off them ok inc other tech

First thing I checked then I checked all wires connected etc

Looking at chargers on Amazon anyone able to guide me to getting right one? I've attached a pic of current charger the bit that plugs into the laptop? I think it's a usb-c connection?

It's a USB-c

Have you checked that the cable is fully pushed in to the power adapter half way up the cable - sometimes mine gets loose

Also check there is nothing stuck in the port in your computer - blow into it or hoover

BenefitsTimingHelp · 19/04/2022 21:09

Thanks

Yea I pulled everything apart and reconnected several times no looseness detected it's all firmly in place and no "wear and tear" on the cable either I look after it.

I have some air spray in so blew on charger and the port and tried then remembered I had the air spray and tried that too - no joy!

So so annoying!

Thinking to maybe get this one?

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/reviews/B08DL14318/ref=cmcrrgetrmbbpagingbtmm2?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=fivestar&pageNumber=2

Original retailer also sells chargers for 3 x price! And lower power too!

I had that with my work lenovo laptop after leaving it on overnight. IT told me to do a hard reset - at the bottom of the laptop there is a tiny hole - poke in it with something and hold for 10(?) seconds, this hard resets the battery and fixes it.

Came on to say this, worked for me too
BenefitsTimingHelp · 19/04/2022 21:19

I tried a hard reset according to Asus site too which says press and hold startup button for 70 secs which I did - made no difference

Also ran diagnostics on battery and battery appears to be fine as far as I can tell

Had a look anyway and can't see any other reset button

Not even detecting charger when it is plugged in is why I am thinking it's a charger issue

OP posts:
Justkeeppedaling · 19/04/2022 22:30

Yes, that's a USB-C cable.

Have you tried cleaning both connector and the pc socket it plugs into?

In principle yes. Just double check the power ratings on the original charger compared to the alternative

In theory any USB C charger will prove whether or not your problem is your charger

BenefitsTimingHelp · 20/04/2022 14:41

now have new charger which seems to be working which would seem to show that this is what the issue was.

I may check the fuse in old charger too once I have bits to do so and if I can fix it then well I’ll have 2 chargers which I reckon won’t be a bad idea to have a spare

thanks for all the replies and things to try. Really appreciate that

OP posts:
Norgie · 20/04/2022 15:58

Try putting a new fuse in the plug.
My laptop wouldn't charge and after checking everything, it turned out to be the fuse in the plug that had gone.

BenefitsTimingHelp · 20/04/2022 17:22

Yes I need to get a teeny screwdriver for the plug and find out what kinda fuse it is and get one and try changing it see if that helps. Assuming a 3 amp fuse likely
