Anyone ever had a corneal abrasion? Want to give me some sympathy?

Or any tips on how to stop it hurting/ make it heal faster? Currently on holiday so no easy access to medicines 🙄

I had an ulcer on my cornea. It was bloody rotten so I sympathise! There are some eye drops that can numb, but might be hard to get hold of. It did heal reasonably quickly, but I really sympathise! My entire face reacted to all the extra tears and puffed up and I got sent to the eye hospital by optician, but I could barely see to read the signs so just wandered around with my eyes barely open and crying until someone found me Grin

I’ve also had a corneal ulcer. You have my sympathy as it was horrible. Hoping I never ever have another one!

Thanks both. Have taken lots of painkillers (too many? 😬) and have spent the day laying in bed with my eyes closed. It definitely feels better than it did last night but v sore. I have had one before so I know they do heal quickly but I'm desperate to be back to normal now! V frustrating!

How much ibuprofen is too much? Asking for a friend...

Hope you're feeling better. I've had several and they are incredibly painful. If you can get any sort of local anaesthetic cream for you eye that will help. Also an eye patch. Something like liquifilm tears to keep your eye hydrated when you get back to stop it re-opening. And paracetamol.

Sympathy coming your way! I had one courtesy of a small child's fingernail once, and it was utter agony.

Get ye to the pharmacy they can definitely help.

Sore! Did it years ago when my hand slipped when making the DD's cot. Eye completely closed for three days but cleared quickly after that. Hope it clears up soon.

noloh1 · 20/04/2022 17:43

I had one about 7 years ago. Was the worst thing ever, I stayed in bed in a dark room for two days. You have my sympathy, hope it stops hurting for you soon!

Speaking as a nurses who has nursed patients admitted to hospital with severe gastric bleeds from Brufen overdoses due to dental pain: please please don’t take more than 2 x 200mg every 8 hours. And try to have some food when you take them.
At a push, you can take them every 6 hours, but no more than 3 x 400mg in 24 hours, so at some point you need a longer gap.
Also, if you take Paracetamol, please only take 2 every 6 hours. You can take them every 4, but only 4 doses of 1g in 24 hours, so again at some point you need to leave a longer gap (also nursed accidental paracetamol overdoses, you will fuck up your liver and get extremely poorly!)
Brufen and Paracetamol are evil!!!

It sounds rotten though, hope you feel better soon!

Same here. Worst pain I can remember. It does clear up, all you can do is wait. Mine reoccurred seven years after the first time it happened (not uncommon apparently). Hope it clears up soon.

It’s awful. I’ve done it a few times as have thin corneas from laser surgery. Like lightning bolts through your eye. The good news is it will heal quickly. You’ll be ok in a couple of days

whoami24601 · 21/04/2022 08:56

Thanks all. I've got co-codamol and ibuprofen but it's not helping much! Was really hoping it would be better by now but still in a fair bit of pain. My sis went to the pharmacy yesterday but they have her some cream that, when I googled, said do NOT put in your eye. So I'm a bit wary of trying that again!

Chloramphenicol Ointment: this is what the hospital gave me when I had a corneal abrasion. It's available over the counter at a pharmacy. Very soothing.
