Kitten and neutering.

Hi all.

We've just got ourselves a beautiful little boy kitten. Only 10 weeks old. 😍
I don't know much about kittens, so I was looking for some advice. When is the absolute earliest, he can he neutered? When can he go outside?

He is just adorable, very playful and cheeky. Didn't know it was possible to love a cat this much. 😍

Sign on with your local vet and take him along for advice. It should be around now though.

I'm outraged you haven't posted a photo of your kitten for me to drool over. You do know that's illegal on mumsnet!

We have his vaccinations tomorrow, so will ask then. Thank you. Smile

Normally advised around 4 months. Mine got mocrochipped at the same time as neutering. I let them out supervised around 6 months. Took a few weeks until I let them go over the fence by themselves

Our vet said neuter at six months but did ours earlier as they are brother and sister and the male was showing a very unhealthy interest...

Some say they should stay inside until they've been neutered but that's quite recent as I've never done it with previous kittens.

You know we need a picture don't you!

Microchipped*

VenusClapTrap · 19/04/2022 11:59

Keep inside until neutered definitely. I’m surprised pp said this is a recent thing - it’s been the case as long as I’ve had cats and I’m not young.

Photo please.

We had all ours done at 3/4 months and before they were allowed outside. They are sexually mature by around 4 months and can have kittens.

GoodSoup · 19/04/2022 14:09

Mine was 3 months when he got snipped. We kept our kitten in for a year and now he just potters round the garden quite happily and doesn’t wander anywhere else. Just spends his time glaring at the birds.

chisanunian · 19/04/2022 14:11

They can start to go outside once they are fully jabbed and neutered. You also need to get him microchipped; and ask the vet about worming & flea treatment.

caringcarer · 19/04/2022 14:24

My vet said earliest was 5 months but preferred 6 months and keep Kittie in before done and 2 weeks after too.

Maydaysoonenough · 19/04/2022 14:25

Our female had to be 2kg for the op. Boys I think the bits just have to be very there!!

thecatneuterer · 19/04/2022 15:44

Boys between at 4 and 6 months for neutering. Females at four months. (Rescues do them all much earlier - as long as they weigh 1kg - which is effectively around 10 or 11 weeks, but it's different for owned kittens).

Floralnomad · 19/04/2022 15:49

Ours are 21 weeks and being done this week ( boy / girl siamese) , our vet was happy to do them from the beginning of April but didn’t actually have any free operating time .

Indoorcatmum · 19/04/2022 16:15

A lot of vets here say 6 months which imo is WAY too late. I've always neutered my boys at 4 months and they are the loveliest, calmest little things with zero growth or health issues. I think 6 months is a lot of time for issues like spraying to develop, and they start to smell.

lljkk · 19/04/2022 18:25

Ours operates on a 2kg rule but they did one of my cats at 1.95 kg.

Boys are easier, may be lower weight threshold.

It's always been the case that cats should be kept inside until they're neutered.

They can get pregnant and produce kittens from 3-4 months old.
