How many scooters?

If you have two children, ages 4 and almost 2, do you have one scooter or two?

Our older one has a scooter (for up to 5 yo), and we're wondering whether to get the little one a scooter too for her upcoming birthday. Or are we better off getting the older one a bigger scooter and passing her old one to the little one?

If the current one is nearly outgrown and in good nick, it makes sense to give it a good clean and personalise it for the younger child (spray paint or stickers) Get them a new helmet though unless they have one already.

Dont do this for everything though, make sure younger child does get some new stuff.

I suppose I'm also wondering whether we need two scooters at all, or whether children can share a 'family' scooter?

That sounds like zero fun OP and a bit odd. My children have a scooter each, sometimes they have a hand me down from their siblings, sometimes they have had a brand new one, just depending on their ages/ability at the time.
peranaka · 17/04/2022 14:28

Is it zero fun? I just wasn't sure if both children will want to scoot at the same time. I think you're saying they will. Fair enough!

I have 2 years between mine. When the older one scoots the younger wanted to. At 6 and 8 they race and play out together on the scooters, we also take them when we walk the dog and they have great fun playing together. I think the plan of buying the older one the next size up and passing down the current one to the younger child is a good one, as long at the older one isn't going to try and demand it back!

Yes they will want to scoot at the same time and as tegu get more confident race and create games together. One scooter to share will just end u o with tears and tantrums.
NerrSnerr · 17/04/2022 14:36

Ours have one each so they can scooter at the same time. As they get older they'll be able to scooter longer distances too as it's easier than walking so in my opinion better to have two.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/04/2022 14:36

Bikes, scooters, skates etc are things they play with alongside each other

Things like slides, balls, goals, trampolines etc they play together with the same one.

LynetteScavo · 17/04/2022 15:31

Everyone needs their own scooter, even if you just get them a cheap second hand one. They need their own bike too. And their own pants (I have a friend with two boys who disagrees with me in this)

MargaretThursday · 17/04/2022 15:49

Definitely one each otherwise they will argue all the way there that they want to ride it and all the way back when they're tired that they don't and you'll end up carrying it.

With two, it's a bit like dogs exercising each other and they'll be trying to keep up with the other.

As a middle child I'd say it depends on the first scooter. Is it still in good order and is it something the second child taste fits with?

I got very frustrated as a child when I either got #1's hand me down. Always their choice of colour etc and normally not in brilliant working order, and definitely well off the first pristine newness.
Or I had to get something that would pass down to bro so had to be blue or black and never a sign of being "girlie".
And I was fully aware that suggesting "nice stickers to make it my own" was basically their way of trying to bribe me and it didn't in any means make up for it.

if she's coming up to her 2nd birthday then she's probably not quite at that stage of awareness yet so you probably will get away with it though.

Thanks everyone.

Stupid question - if we get a scooter for the older one (it would be size 5-12 yo), should we get a three wheeler or two wheeler? So older children use three wheelers?

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 17/04/2022 18:58

I would get a maxi micro scooter. Still three wheels, it says 5-12 years but 4 year old will be fine on it

peranaka · 17/04/2022 19:37

Thank you. That's what I assumed would be appropriate, but my husband made me question myself by asking why wouldn't she be using a two-wheeler. I think when we were younger, older children used two-wheelers?

OP posts:
NerrSnerr · 17/04/2022 20:44

I think it depends on the child for 2 or 3 wheels. My eldest has been happily scooting on a 2 wheeler since she was 5 and my youngest has just got a 2 wheeler for his 5th birthday but still prefers his 3 wheeler for any distance. They do scoot a lot though and we tend to go quite far on them.

TolkiensFallow · 17/04/2022 20:47

2 scooters. At around 5 they need the next size up.

notanaturalmum · 17/04/2022 20:55

For the nearly two year old I would get a mini micro with the seat and the push handle.
Then at least if they get tired you can push them and not have to carry them home.

tomatorich112 · 17/04/2022 21:02

I have a three wheeler😂 a micro adult scooter, it's by far the most popular with the girls who play here. The boys all like the stunt scooter (ankle bruiser) We take them to he park, so yes you need more than one, and whilst I love hand me downs, children need shiny new things some times. it's only fair.

peranaka · 17/04/2022 22:01

I'm definitely agreed with you all that we need a second scooter. Just trying to work out if a three wheeler is the right choice. I think it is, especially as my daughter is not the most coordinated and is very cautious. I just don't want her to look silly if she goes to school and everyone else has a two wheeler.

OP posts:
Dinoteeth · 18/04/2022 02:01

What stage is she at biking, ie can she go a balance or peddle bike, if she has her balance I'd go for 2 wheels.

AlwaysLatte · 18/04/2022 02:06

We passed down the mini microscooter from one to the next when they upgraded the eldest to a Maxi but got new handles etc from their website. But they ended up with more grown up scooters a few years later. Definitely one each!

AlwaysLatte · 18/04/2022 02:09

Nb although the Maxi goes up to 12 I found both my two wanted to upgrade to more grown up ones at about age 7/8 as that's what so many had at school and they can do tricks on them. But it was still worth it.

peranaka · 18/04/2022 07:55

She's got a balance bike but still can't use it properly!

OP posts:
DeathMetalMum · 18/04/2022 08:04

We went straight to 2 wheeled scooters around 4 you need one each. Ours took them almost everywhere we walked for years. Brilliant for the school run.

We didn't bother with micro scooters, we got JDBugg junior scooters and they've lasted brilliantly even replaced the wheels on dd1's (very easily) as the bearings went.

Miss2018 · 18/04/2022 08:12

We went to a micro scooter 2 wheeler when my dd was 5. I didn’t like the 3 wheelers as they are tilt to turn and she never quite got the hang of it (she’s very uncoordinated).
She picked up the 2 wheeler fine and all her friends fight over it (who do ironically have the 3 wheelers). It’s also easy to drag when she gets tired, unlike the 3 wheeler which tips forward a bit and obviously takes her leaning to turn corners. We’ve also took the micro scooter on planes and U.K. holidays as it folds so small

amicissimma · 18/04/2022 10:44

Be ready to lug 2 scooters about when they both decide, probably at the furthest possible point from home, that they can't possibly scoot a moment longer!
