Last year I went to a food festival and brought a few things in one of those olives and cheese stalls. I never picked up on the cost when I swiped and worried about it until I got home and it was £4 (just double checked my bank online) - gutted I never purchased more tbh !

The same festival today and the same stall - I got 3 scoops of different olives and they’re all weighed together - £36 !!!

Even with the cost of living increase - how on earth can 3 scoops of olives cost £36 ??

I feel quite faint to be honest Sad

I think there was a mistake last year.

Fancy olives with herbs and cheese etc. are bloody expensive!

Hugasauras · 16/04/2022 23:03

I think the £3.60 poster was joking and is not OP Grin

CatWoman12345 · 16/04/2022 23:08

I don’t understand the name change references and I don’t know how much they were per Kg. I clearly shouldn’t be allowed out on my own.

They are lovely though, just not £36 worth of lovely. I think last year I must have been undercharged!

You've been had by an Olive dealer: Got you hooked for £4 so they could then hit you up for £36. Will you be buying more?

TheGirlWhoLived · 16/04/2022 23:55

Oh yes I am definitely not op… nor do I have the olives! Sorry I thought it was amusing in my wine addled state

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 17/04/2022 00:35

I discovered Lindt pick and mix the other day £15!

Lesson here is, if the price isn't clearly displayed it's very likely to be far more expensive than you imagine.

Also that 100g of food isn't very much, see also fudge, pick n mix, the Lindt shop.

It's a mistake most people only make once.

I've seen it mentioned on a couple of threads and it's worth repeating. We're all going to have to get used to and stop being afraid to say 'no thank you, it's too expensive' and this sort of situation, where the retailer relies on people not realising the cost and being too embarrassed to say anything when they find out, is definitely the place to start being more aware of this.

canichange · 17/04/2022 06:13

I'd assume I was undercharged last year and say it was £29 each year which doesn't seem so bad.

canichange · 17/04/2022 06:13

Sorry £20

God I love olives.

Hi,
This happened to me this bank holiday weekend at the Foodie festival Brighton. I asked the lady for 3 types of olives, so she scooped some up and bagged them. I didn't' quite hear the price but it sounded like £14, which was more than I wanted so I swiped my card. turns out it was £40 !! Of course I complained and so she popped some olives back & gave me £20 cash back. I check my bank balance this morning to find out the scam continues as she actually charged me £48.88 on my card. I'm furious and clearly not the only person they have scammed. I'm complaining to the festival organisers in the hope of getting them kicked out of future festivals. Scammers are not needed at events like that.

Stravaig · 03/05/2022 10:50

Folks, there's no scam here. Olives are expensive. They're a luxury food item which many people can't afford. I don't buy them. Ordering them by the scoopful from a stall at a farmer's market doesn't make them cheaper. It's for you to check the price per g/kg and only request the amount you can pay for.

DockOTheBay · 03/05/2022 10:56

It's not a scam, that's just how much they cost. Yes £36 is loads for food, but even in the supermarket they're £3 for a tiny punnet, and i would expect fancy organic/hand marinaded etc to be at least double the price. So 3 "hefty" scoops could easily come to that amount.

Last year there must have been a mistake when you were charged £4 so overall you've had a bit of a bargain - it was probably supposed to be £40. And next time you'll know to check.

MissusMaisel · 03/05/2022 11:07

Bought, not brought.

You bought something without checking the price. Never a good idea.

stuntbubbles · 03/05/2022 11:19

Placemarking for when you go again next year and get charged an entirely different amount

Silversprinkles · 03/05/2022 11:30

Maybe I'm just too Scottish but I would never buy anything without checking the price, and I always just glance at the card reader machine before I ping my card too, in case there's a typing error.

I do love fancy olives. Mmmmmmmm.

Stravaig · 03/05/2022 11:34

This is making me realise that we buy most things pre-packaged these days. Even cheese. We've lost the art of food-buying conversation.

I once worked on a deli counter in a wee wholefood store, serving cheese, pate, salami, anchovies, coffee and yes, olives. All very typical conversation at any food counter:

How much does that piece/tub/fillet weigh?
How much does it cost?
What does x weight look like?
How much does x weight cost?
What does £x look like?
How many g can I get for £x?

Can I have that piece/tub please?
Can I have x weight please?
Can I have £x-worth please?
A bit more/larger please.
Oh less/smaller please.
Actually, no, I've changed my mind.
Can I have this instead please?

Can I taste a piece please?
Can I smell it please?
Yum, yes please.
Ugh, no - can I try that instead?
What do you suggest I try?

How is it made?
Where is it made?
When was it caught?
How long will it last?
What are the ingredients?

Sorry I didn't hear that. How much did you say?
Thank you!

(Doing my bit to encourage politeness to serving staff :)

But they don't advertise their price and they give you the impression they are cheap. They are hopeful that people feel too embarrassed to say no!

Earlsmum · 04/05/2022 11:57

It is a scam when the stall holder says your card was charged £40 then £48.88 is taken from my account. Even after the stall holder put back seem olives and gave me cash back there is no way I came home with £20 of olives.

MissusMaisel · 04/05/2022 12:06

They do not give the impression they are cheap! Anyone with an ounce of sense knows that artisan olives at a food festival are going to be stupidly expensive.

You ASK the price. It's not hard. If you don't and are then too embarrassed t say no thanks, thats on you too.

Gensola · 04/05/2022 12:22

This happened to me recently with cheese at a posh deli - tiny piece of goat cheese was £9 and I was too embarrassed to say no so just paid it. That was an expensive goat cheese salad!

Haha I was done with pickled garlics from a food festival ! They were amazing but that was all I could afford to eat that week !!

@Stravaig I cower at your market stall haggling prowess - definitely adopting this from now on !

My sister bought a punnet of tomatoes and a small piece of cheese from a very upmarket farm shop. Her bill was more than £20. All she wanted was a cheese and tomato sandwich! 😱
