Which job would you choose?

I left teaching in a state school at Xmas for many reasons. I gave my notice with nothing to go to and I got a job with a private company doing something education related but not teaching. I said I might return to teaching for a job in a good independent school a shortish commute. One of these came up for my subject so I applied thinking I'd have no chance. I was called for interview and have been offered it. The dilemma is that I am actually enjoying my current job way more than I thought. For context I have two children in y2 and y4. So now I am trying to make a choice:

Job A (current job)
26k for 28 hours a week. Overtime available.
Wfh as much as I want meaning my DC rarely have to go to expensive wrap around childcare and I save loads on fuel. I tend to go into the office once a week.
My colleagues are really lovely
Boss is v flexible about needing to pop to dentist/doc/school event and making up the hours later.
Room for progression isn't clear - possibly limited.
More of a job than a career.
Small business who pay only 3% pension contributions
Obviously no school holidays but so far that hasn't been too hard to manage via a mix of wfh from me and DH, grandmas and annual leave.

Job B
Subject lead in a well known independent school. Day and boarding but this job is in the primary section with no boarders.
Full time 46k
Lots of holiday - longer than state by quite a lot. Big benefit atm with young kids.
Not teachers pension but a very good private alternative
65% fee remission for my own DC if I wanted it. (Possible for secondary school as I am v happy with their state primary)
More of a career than a job

Two such different jobs with pros and cons for both, just not sure what is best. Would love some thoughts and opinions from others Smile

Personally I would go for the career especially if there is a good chance they will go to school there. Will you be able to afford it?

The holidays and your holiday coordinating will be great for 5 - 7 years!

Job B. More money, more holiday. Lovely prep with no boarders. No brainer!

@Kezzie200 we would be able to afford it with a 65% discount. No chance for the full fees though!

I’d take job B. It’s a career rather than just coasting.

Job a sounds lovely but if it was me I'd be more drawn to career progression from job b as well as the benefit of the holidays and being able to send my dc there.

I think I agree with the others option B. Long term it's the right decision. It's like the new job has come abit to early for you. You would probably enjoy the job you are in for another year or so but in the long run option B is better.
I had a similar situation not long after I came back from maternity I was offered a job in a field I always wanted to get into. However I just want to stay part time in my nice easy job where I didn't have to worry to much about childcare. In the end I took the new job as I knew I would regret it long term.

Hainese · 14/04/2022 21:54

@yellowwellingtons the possibility of my Dc being able to go there is a massive draw tbh - it's absolutely not the kind of education and experience I could afford at full price. But I feel like that's maybe not a great reason to take a job!
Someone upthread mentioned coasting - this is what I'm doing now and I could possibly regret this once the DC are a bit older and more independent
