Settle a debate - disability discrimination?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/04/2022 17:25

If an advert for a job says 'must be able to read without glasses' is that discrimination?

OP posts:
crackingreward · 14/04/2022 17:28

Where is the disability element?

BlanketsBanned · 14/04/2022 17:28

Whats the job.

Igmum · 14/04/2022 17:30

Not sure wearing glasses counts as a disability. Interesting specification though. Why? Would contact lenses be acceptable?

puddleduck234 · 14/04/2022 17:30

Depends. If your applying to be a fast jet pilot you probably need decent eyesight without glasses

SaxendaSummer · 14/04/2022 17:30

It actually says without glasses?

What kind?
What about contact lenses?

Does it mean (it say) unaided vision?

SaxendaSummer · 14/04/2022 17:31

It said you needed to see a certain distance, unaided on a years old police application form

We need more details

Iwillgotothegym · 14/04/2022 17:32

May be indirect disability discrimination. Everyone treated the same but someone who has a disability related to sight disadvantaged. Maybe age as older people more likely to have issues with sight.

Depends on the job I suppose whether can be objectively justified. Would likely be limited roles able to justify not wearing glasses.

TheSnowyOwl · 14/04/2022 17:33

We need more information.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/04/2022 17:33

It's a chip shop, they reckon glasses steam up and it slow the process down as the person wearing the glasses can't see clearly.

There’s quite a distinct difference between needing to wear glasses (not a disability) and having a visual impairment (usually a disability).

Some jobs are exempt from the DDA due to the cognitive or physical nature of the job role or specification.

Samcro · 14/04/2022 17:35

Wearing glasses isn't a disability on itsown

Redglitter · 14/04/2022 17:35

A chip shop?? OK, wasn't expecting that

Thats a crazy reasoning though

IglesiasPiggl · 14/04/2022 17:35

It depends on the job. If it's a safety requirement then no, it's not discrimination.

BlanketsBanned · 14/04/2022 17:36

Thats mad, can you post a pic of the ad. What do they need to read, maybe someones specs droppes into the fryer once.

IglesiasPiggl · 14/04/2022 17:36

OMG, just read your update, apologies for the cross post. It sounds more like they have had a bad experience with one particular person and are now projecting that onto the job description. Not acceptable in my view.

crackingreward · 14/04/2022 17:37

I can read without glasses but I couldn't work behind a counter without them. They are for distance not reading. This is bizarre.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/04/2022 17:37

They need to be able to read the tickets with the order on.

OP posts:
HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/04/2022 17:39

I can't believe that an ad can state that. Someone else said take that bit off the ad, interview people with glasses and just turn them down for the role.

This has irrationally irritated me!

@HollyBollyBooBoo

I can't believe that an ad can state that. Someone else said take that bit off the ad, interview people with glasses and just turn them down for the role.

This has irrationally irritated me!

But why? What is the reason they don't want someone with glasses? It makes no sense.

PinkyU · 14/04/2022 17:41

It seems the question you need to ask is; does the person have a disability in order to determine if they’ve been subject to disability discrimination.

Does their prescription or condition define them as having a visual impairment?

Then, does the job specification exempt it from the DDA based on safety (trip hazards, hot oil etc)?

BlanketsBanned · 14/04/2022 17:42

Do you work there, they cant waste peoples time interviewing then turning them down, I would send the original ad to trading standards or whoever is responsible for food outlets.

Viviennemary · 14/04/2022 17:44

No because if steam is a problem they can wear contact lenses which aren't affected.

crackingreward · 14/04/2022 17:51

@Viviennemary

No because if steam is a problem they can wear contact lenses which aren't affected.

It's not about steam that's ridiculous - lots of people working in chip shops have glasses. This is the oddest thing

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/04/2022 17:52

@crackingreward because the glasses steam up because of oil and steam and therefore slow the operative down on serving.

OP posts:
Mooshering · 14/04/2022 17:53

No it's not disability discrimination. Wearing glasses is not a recognised disability, and people can wear contact lenses.
