I posted before that I was a member of a hiking club for many years. After a breakup last year, I decided not to return as he did, he's not my friend and I don't want to walk with him. I've slowly come to terms with my decision and feel I've made the right one.

I have been getting out on my own, albeit on shorter hikes and I enjoy the quiet or listening to a podcast as I'd describe myself as an introvert. However, I do suffer from anxiety, am questioning whether I 'should' join another club to mix more. Besides reading, this is my only hobby and I live alone, but I'm fairly happy in my own company but not for extended periods.

I'm just interested in people's preferences on hiking alone or with a club?

I prefer to go with someone.

But I don't do it through a club, it's more by asking friends who might be interested and taking it from there

@LoveHiking if you're on facebook there is a group called I Love The Lake District where lots of men and women post photos of themselves fell walking alone. Maybe that would give you a bit of confidence to carry on alone?
If you found a group you felt comfortable with and wanted to join then you could have the best of both worlds - some company on some walks, time on your own for others.

Yes, I think a happy mixture of both might be best.

I prefer to go alone. I can walk at the pace I want, stop where I want, change the route if I want to. I'm clearly not a people person!

Lovemusic33 · 14/04/2022 15:03

I hike alone and love it. Occasionally I will hike with a friend but really I prefer doing it alone as I can stop when I like.

There is a group on Facebook called ‘outdoor mates and dates’ where people get together for group walks, activities and weekends away.

LizBennet · 14/04/2022 15:24

I prefer it on my own, I don't mind a small group ever now and then.

OctopusSay · 14/04/2022 15:33

I like both. For me they're actually quite different activities. I love the social aspect of hiking with a group and get something very important from that, but get more peace from hiking on my own. I wouldn't want to do exclusively one or the other.

Otherpeoplesteens · 14/04/2022 15:41

I can take or leave both but - from someone who used to volunteer with both Mountain and Cave rescue - please take sensible precautions when going alone and do not do it if the conditions don't allow.

I prefer to go alone (with the dog) or with my mum for human company.

Aniita · 14/04/2022 15:48

Both tbh. But I tend to go with friends rather than a club. We're you particular friends with anyone in the club you could suggest a walk with?

helpfulperson · 14/04/2022 15:52

I enjoy both at different times for different reasons.

There are loads of hiking groups about. The ramblers is a network of clubs and once you are a member you can walk with any group. Useful if you go away on holiday you can just find the local group. Or if you don't gel with one group you can go to another.

The other option is walking holidays. I use HF holidays although that tends to be for the older age group or Explore for younger fitter.

madaboutrunning · 14/04/2022 16:18

I enjoy both - sometimes I'll go out with my DH and/or friends, and sometimes alone.

There are lots of hiking groups about, and also some online forums where you can meet someone for a specific walk. I've not used it myself but Glamoraks is a website for women looking for someone to hike with in the UK, and they have an active FB page too. That might be worth a look.

I prefer to walk alone, but if I'm doing anything bar low-level bog-trotting, I will always let somebody know my route, when I expect to be back (ish) and kit myself out properly.

ExMachinaDeus · 14/04/2022 17:20

I walk in Cumbria, and generally on my own. I do high level walks in good weather in the spring, summer, and early autumn - when the days are long, and visibility is good. I love it when it's just me and the sheep.

But a lot of the popular walks (Fairfield Horseshoe , for example) are usually full of people, so in terms of safety, you should be OK.
