With the price increases...I can find things cheaper at Asda now like baby wipes etc

What we buy on a regular basis from Tesco has often been Aldi price matched. I find no real difference shopping between the 2.

MissDollyMix · 14/04/2022 03:44

The last couple of times I’ve done my weekly shop at Tesco it was cheaper than my usual Aldi shop.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/04/2022 05:41

It depends what you buy. Asda is good for bulk packs, 'big saving events' type promotions, value brands and loss leaders that will sometimes be cheaper for individual items, but you'll find that other things in the shop are more expensive, eg I've just looked at a couple of items that we regularly get in Aldi that are much cheaper than other shops and found that halloumi and chorizo at Asda are £2 and £2.20 where at Aldi, both items are under £1.50. So you'll likely lose the saving by spending more on other items.

The other consideration would be is the quality equivalent. In Aldi, the items is usually equivalent to the main brand, whereas in Asda, the cheapest version might be a value brand, which might be fine, but might also be poorer quality than the Aldi version.

But for things like baby wipes, and many other non perishable things, if you can, stock up where things are cheapest and rotate supermarkets so you only have to buy fresh stuff week to week, and for things like hallomi and chorizo in my example, you don't buy it when you're in Asda, because you bought a few of each when you were in Aldi last week.

Spring onions are 39p in Aldi, 75p in Asda and £1 in the co-op. Prices correct as of last week.

QuebecBagnet · 14/04/2022 06:08

Just checked online and they’re 37p in tesco. Maybe tesco is cheaper!

bjjgirl · 14/04/2022 06:11

I find quality and pack sizes so much worse in Tesco and Asda than in aldi

Oblomov22 · 14/04/2022 06:27

Interesting. I think Tesco took a long time to wake up to the threat, but had finally price matched.

DinosApple · 14/04/2022 06:28

Tesco are price matching Aldi on spring onions this week (I had to buy 5 packets yesterday Grin). And on a load of other veg.

We go to Aldi once in a blue moon and used to find it cheaper, but at the moment there's fuel shortages round here (has been for the last 2 weeks), plus huge roadworks on the way to Aldi, so it's cheaper and easier to have a Tesco shop delivered.

AperolWhore · 14/04/2022 06:41

Tesco is definitely the cheapest supermarket now, I’ve done like for like basket comparisons on all supermarkets. If I do the Tesco delivery saver and plans all meals I save around £30 compared to the other supermarkets including nappies.

StopFeckingFaffing · 14/04/2022 06:48

I think it really depends what you buy and specifically how much processed/ preprepared food you buy

I always seem to spend more if I go anywhere other than Aldi but part of that is the wider choice so you get tempted away from the staples

If you are mainly buying basic ingredients to prepare your own meals - fruit, veg, oil, cheese, meat, fish, rice, pasta, deli bits etc plus basic household items like loo roll, toileteries, bin bags etc then I honestly believe you will always spend less in Aldi

Sapphirejane · 14/04/2022 06:50

I still find Aldi the best value for money in terms of quality vs price. The chicken breast at Aldi is 100x better than Tesco’s which just leak out all the water pumped into them when cooked.

madamegazelle1 · 14/04/2022 08:54

Tesco price match some things but Aldi is cheaper overall for me- I much prefer the quality in Aldi and they don't keep chopping and changing their prices/pack sizes and thinking we don't notice like Tesco do!

DownNative · 14/04/2022 09:21

Tesco only price match a small selection of Aldi's stock and nowhere near enough to make it cheaper.

Aldi is still cheaper right now.

Honeyroar · 14/04/2022 09:24

Aldi has definitely raised prices and changed a bit, but I definitely think it’s still cheaper.

MissyB1 · 14/04/2022 09:27

I do a combination of Aldi and Asda, luckily they are next to each other! I’ve worked out what is cheaper in Aldi (2/3 of my shop). But also some stuff just isn’t available in Aldi anyway so have to get the rest in Asda. It works for us and I definitely save money going to Aldi.

Duracellbunnywannabe · 14/04/2022 09:37

I did an Aldi shop the other day and compared a number of products and they were all cheaper at Aldi. The daff were 10pm cheaper but awful. The pull ups were sized huge compared to huggies who size very small.

I’m going to start to change over to Aldi but I’m still going to have to go else where for some products.

MsMiaWallace · 14/04/2022 09:39

My delivery pass has just ran out at Tesco & was gonna go shopping at aldi instead.
I also like Farmfoods.

Talliah · 14/04/2022 09:49

I’m not watching the pennies to the extent that I have to buy the cheapest of everything and find the quality of things like cheese and meat just make Aldi much better value for us. The Specially Selected range is much better priced than Sainsburys or Tesco eg nice olives.
