Asylum seekers to the UK sent to Rwanda

What do you think about the governments plan to send all asylum seekers that come to the UK to Rwanda to be processed. I think this is inhumane. A lot of them have come from places like Syria, Iran etc and travelled across the channel with all the associated risks only to be sent 6000 mile to be processed. What about the cost to do this? I think it’s a big mistake

@midsomermurderess

Cost less to send asylum seekers to Rwanda? You think? This from today's Mirror: 'MPs previously heard Australia’s offshore processing system cost $1bn a year for just 300 people - or £1.9m per refugee per year. Tory ex-minister Andrew Mitchell warned last month: “It would be much cheaper to put each one in the Ritz and send all the under-18s to Eton.” And where is this eye-watering amount of money per person in going?
This sums it up. It’s a joke at best and at worst a scandal. Never mind inhumane. There are not 1000 people coming in dinghies as pp has mentioned, very few people in the grand scheme of things actually. This makes me ashamed to be British tbh. Apparently it’s been inspired by the Greek asylum model.. that’s been a complete humanitarian disaster- obviously great inspiration for the lovely Pritti Patel. What a lovely person she must be!!!

This thread has reminded me of Stuart Lee’s “..comin’ over ‘ere.. taking our jobs..” sketch!!

Gowithme · 14/04/2022 12:10

There are currently around 600 people a day crossing, they expect that to increase to around 1000 as the weather improves so I'm afraid you're incorrect @sjxoxo. Last year nearly 30,000 people made the crossing and we are already way above the numbers that were arriving this time last year.

It's sad and desperate and I have no idea what the answer is but we have no where to put many of the people who have been born here so how do we house all these people? It wouldn't surprise me at all if many of them of them are very skilled and that even if they weren't they would be prepared to work very hard to make a good life but where do we put them? We are the 8th most populated country in Europe (after places like Monaco, the Vatican City and San Marino) and we just don't have the space or housing stock to be of much help.

www.worldatlas.com/articles/european-countries-by-population-density.html

I think this is something the whole world needs to collaborate on and try to come up with a proper solution that sorts this issue out long term. Thinking that shipping people off to Rwanda to be processed is the answer is just about the most random solution I can think of.

RafaIstheKingofClay · 14/04/2022 12:19

They are here for the "free" NHS and the multiple jobs and benefits available in the UK (and the streets paved with gold).

If this is your draw and you’ve travelled through Europe, then you wouldn’t chose the U.K. as your final destination. Despite what the DM and express would have you believe the U.K. benefits system is pretty shit when compared to much of Europe. And the gap is getting wider.

ChoiceMummy · 14/04/2022 12:36

@carefullycourageous

But I imagine the costs versus UK overall will be lower. Do you? Do you imagine that? How sweet.
Well for starters, the costs involved with the staffing and the running costs will be lower than in the UK. Lok at the costs of running similar in the UK.

The amount needed in Rwanda less than half that of the UK. So all allowances etc would be far reduced.

And again, its about deterring applicants at the outset. And this will. So cost effective.

MasterGland · 14/04/2022 12:52

It's obviously a ridiculous suggestion. However, we must as a country start a serious dialogue about both asylum and migration. The world is becoming an increasingly unstable place (compared to recent times). There is war in Europe that threatens to spill over into Lithuania, the Balkans and perhaps even Finland. Climate change will see most of Bangladesh below sea level. Ensuing famine and civil strife will also trigger large scale movements of people across the globe. We must have serious conversations about how we will approach this. The utopian ideal of no borders, and open arms to refugees would quickly see societal breakdown in the UK. Not because the people fleeing are criminals or have bad intentions, but because there will be so many, and we are a tiny island with a very unequal society.

Yes, this suggestion is ridiculous, inhumane, abhorrent etc. But what will we do, when truly large numbers of people begin to move and there are increasingly few habitable, safe places to settle?

ChiswickFlo · 14/04/2022 12:54

The nazis wanted to send the Jews to Madagascar...

Looks like it's really happening.

Been in discussions for over 2yrs apparently.

feellikeanalien · 14/04/2022 13:22

Perhaps instead of spending millions on sending people to Rwanda that money could be used to make the UK asylum process more efficient.

As I understand it these applications take months and even if they are unsuccessful there is a very low likelihood of being deported.

Perhaps establishing a procedure by which people can make a claim whilst not in the UK so that desperate people can apply for asylum without having to risk their lives in small boats and enriching the vile people smugglers who arrange these trips.

emuloc · 14/04/2022 13:24

The contempt I feel for the Government, could not sink any lower.

...stick around... It'll get worse to deflect from partygate/cost of living crisis, inflation etc No coincidence that De Pfeffle has been to Ukraine and announced this horrific policy now. Truth is, the racist tories will lap this shit up
carefullycourageous · 14/04/2022 13:31

@ChoiceMummy You are welcome to believe whatever you like even if it is absolute bullshit

Tory MPs i.e. governing party disagree with you: Conservative former cabinet minister Andrew Mitchell said: “We know that it would be incredibly expensive.

“Judged by the costs of Australian offshoring, the British taxpayer would face unprecedented costs per asylum seeker.

“It would be much cheaper to put each one in the The Ritz and send all the under 18s to Eton. That would cost a great deal less than what is currently proposed."

carefullycourageous · 14/04/2022 13:32

I think the fact people welcome this even though it will do nothing to improve any immigration problems and will cost us as taxpayers a fortune shows what is wrong with this country - the electorate are too easily duped.

Ylvamoon · 14/04/2022 13:32

@MasterGland - I agree, we need to adress & discuss these issues.

In the end it will all be about acess to resources - clean water, food & energy for starters.
If you look at the UK today, you can see how easily things are tiped over the edge. Diesel, tin tomatoes or cooking oil, we are all noticing the thinning out of our supermarket shelves. Everyone knows about the housing crisis but nobody wants to acknowledge that it is directly liked to availability of suitable land.
If we are just coping with supply now, how can we support an extra 30k people arriving on our shores each year for many years to come?
Realistically, we can't help everyone that arrives on our shores. I don't know if shipping migrants off to Rwanda is the answer, but someone higher up thinks it is worth exploring this.

carefullycourageous · 14/04/2022 13:36

Everyone knows about the housing crisis but nobody wants to acknowledge that it is directly liked to availability of suitable land this is nonsense, the landbanking by big building forms plus the amount of brownfield land is considerable, it is a political choice to restrict house building. Our issue is private rent being big business, since RTB fucked the social housing sector. Plus government restrictions on social housing in general.

carefullycourageous · 14/04/2022 13:44

More on the costs from Cooper:

Australian Refugee Council offshoring figs show 3127 people were sent to Papua New Guinea/ Nauru since 2013 at cost to Australian taxpayer of AUS$10bn.

That’s £1.7m per person

The government has lost its mind, this policy is not rational.

midsomermurderess · 14/04/2022 13:46

Anyone writing about 'the hand-wringers and do-gooders' effectively excludes themselves from adult discussions. It's an 'idiots ahed', I have nothing to contribute klaxon.

Narcoanonymoose · 14/04/2022 13:47

And already despite all this the not so right on feminists are still banging on about voting for him. Feminist saviour my arse.

Ylvamoon · 14/04/2022 14:34

@carefullycourageous - how do you explain all the houses being built on flood plains or rich fertile farmland? Because of the land issues. Wake up, Britain is surrounded by water, its a relatively small island. We only have X amount of land to feed ourselves and to build houses on for the ever growing population....

DragonOverTheMoon · 14/04/2022 14:38

There's a live stream on FB now about it. Comments are filled with - good job Boris.

CakeIsNotALuxury · 14/04/2022 14:42

We can't even house the people who were born here... how can we house 1,000 + people who come here illegally? I'm in agreement with it.

France is a safe country there's no need to come here.

Peregrina · 14/04/2022 14:51

Because we chose not to. MacMillan built shed loads of council houses only a decade or so after a gruelling and costly war. Johnson's despicable lying government is only interested in their wealthy housebuilding mates making as much money as possible. But they are black and browned skinned people so they don't count.

Vote for a government that doesn’t believe in austerity, and doesn’t leave their citizens in fuel and food poverty while making sure politicians profit in the millions.

People realise that, right? That it’s the government in control of how we live, not groups of asylum seekers? The government that are setting policy and making sure it benefits them and not you?

Peregrina · 14/04/2022 15:19

But they didn’t…

So they gassed them instead, along with gypsies, homosexuals and others they thought undesirable. Don't forget that this was a civilised cultured nation that sank to barbarism. Don't think it can't happen here.
