My niece has just had a baby boy. It’s been 20 years since I had a baby and wondered if you lovely new Mums still use sleeping bags like these:

If not, what else would you want as a gift?

A nice money pig / jar.
I may be odd but ds got a beautiful one and still have now.

Yes very useful and pretty. I would have welcomed that. Perfect tog for summer too.

I also liked the few personalised gifts we received with her name on such as a blanket, cushion, framed print etc.

I'd go clothes. They are so bloody expensive in those first few years. For that price, you could get maybe 3-4 outfits in a bigger size for her to put away.

I was so grateful that we had so many gifts of clothes in varying sizes in that first year whilst I was on maternity pay.

Someone gave me a lovely roll up height chart in a keepsake tube. It's a fantastic thing to keep a track of their height on milestones. I love it

IDontHaveAnOutingHobby · 14/04/2022 00:08

I always:
take sanitary towels if visiting at hospital (based on experience-having to send by brother out on day 3 as the lists of what to buy were ridiculous and positive feedback!)

nappies if visiting a newborn (not newborn unless small- next size up)

We got so much that was unusable (8 lb 13 baby and 12lb baby) neither of whom ever fitted new born clothing

Nappies means the parents can save cash and use it as they wish- or just give cash (if family- wouldn't give cash to friends)

Oh, its very useful and so thoughful of you! I'd be welcoming this gift for sure.
When my sister and her DH welcomed their first baby to the world they mostly had all the baby items so we did gifts like cleaning services or delivery subscriptions or family photoshoot+smartshow 3d video and a photo book etc.

I think that sleeping bag is a beautiful gift. For me the best presents are things that I wouldn't splurge on myself. I buy all DS's babygros and sleep suits etc in supermarkets or Primark so a sleeping bag from the White Company would be a lovely luxurious thing to receive. I say go for it! Much better than cheap outfits or stuffed toys that won't ever get played with.

ShirleyPhallus · 14/04/2022 12:11

I’d absolutely love this, perfect for the summer, yes please!

Otherwise cute little outfits would be wonderful, but neutral stuff (I assume if you’re looking at white company then you won’t be buying Mummy’s Little Monster type shit)

Contrary to the ideas upthread I’d have hated a money box or a height chart for the wall, imo it’s tat and would go straight to charity

TeddyTonks · 14/04/2022 12:15

It's really lovely and practical but very expensive for what it is, so depends on their personality- would they prefer one very 'nice' item, or perhaps a few outfits or money to put away for the baby? I personally would be happy and grateful for any of the above, not really fussed on keepsake items and definitely don't buy a soft toy/teddy or blanket as you get given so many!

smooshraspberry · 14/04/2022 12:18

I would highly recommend a tuppence and crumble star wrap! I give them to all new parents now. We absolutely love ours, has come in so so so useful. Perhaps get the medium so it's ready for autumn

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 14/04/2022 12:21

Yeah I'm not keen on things like money box or soft toy soothers, we got loads!!

Yes people still use sleeping vans like that and its lovely, but expensive, you can get nice ones from asda for £10. But then itsnice to get nicer things as gifts, you sound really thoughtful!!

Whatever you buy, consider the seasons. So if bsby is newborn now, don't buy summer clothing in 6-9 month, chances are they'll fit into it in winter. And I'd avoid fleece sleep suits, I got a few and yes they are nice, but I'm too worried about overheating to use them. I have a 3.5yr old and a 16 week old.

Friends of ours brought us posh ready meals that were lovley, healthier and quicker than a takeaway, I wouldn't have bought them for myself, but they were so handy to have in the fridge!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 14/04/2022 12:23

Or a practical rattle/toy like and o ball or match stick monkey

Thank you to everyone who has made suggestions here - I really appreciate you all taking time out of your very busy days. I think I will go with the sleeping bag from The White Company and I might get a small other item that has been suggested - haven’t decided yet.
