Strange one but has anyone had an experience with their childs teeth looking like this. The dentist didnt seem too worried but hes complaining that it hurts now, so wondering if i should go back.

Should say that hes 8 now. The 2 teeth at the bottom front are adult, but they came through behind his baby teeth and had 2 sets for a while, the baby ones took ages to come out. No baby teeth have come out at the top.

If it hurts go back.

Not the same but similar. One of dd's top adult tooth came through and her baby tooth stayed in place for about 12 months (maybe longer) Dd was down to have it removed but then covid. It came out on it's own eventually however we did have calls from the dentist during covid to check up and see if it was causing any pain. It wasn't but they would have got her in to remove it if it was.

My sons first two bottom teeth were like this very recently (he’s not lost anymore) he’s 7 next month. It was strange because my daughters teeth just fell out normally and adult ones grew in after. I will say that my son complained massively about the pain he was feeling as his baby teeth were getting wobbly, must be something to do with the pressure pushing the baby teeth before they’re technically ready to come out.
I wouldn’t stress too much, I got my son to gently wobble the tooth due to come out, and avoided harder foods so it wouldn’t cause him pain. Maybe teething gel might help too.

Do you mean the teeth behind?
Ds has that at the top and the bottom. He complains of pain too, dentist isn’t concerned but has referred him to orthodontist

Is the tooth that is in front of the new one coming through also a baby tooth? If so I doubt the dentist will be too worried as they'll be able to move the new one into place with a brace if necessary.

Andacherryonthetop · 13/04/2022 16:36

My sons is exactly the same at the bottom. Dentist not worried at all. He was more concerned that it wasn’t coming up at all (it had been 2 years) but when it finally appeared behind the others the dentist was pleased. He said in time the orthodontist will move it

Maternitynamechange · 13/04/2022 16:52

They call it shark teeth. Really common.

ouch44 · 13/04/2022 16:59

My DS had these. They do seem to sort themselves out. DS is 15 and been on orthodontist waiting year for 2 years. In that time his sharks teeth have almost come level with the others. Probably still needs a brace though

bananatwain · 13/04/2022 17:00

Really common and nothing they can do until much older. Try not to worry OP.

AliceS1994 · 13/04/2022 17:07

Really common, small amount on intermittent pain as they grow and settle is usual so I wouldn't worry too much but if pain is severe and persistent go back to dentist.

Townie22 · 13/04/2022 17:34

Yes the teeth in front of those are baby teeth.

Ill keep an eye on it and see if he keeps saying it hurts.

No signs whats so ever of his top teeth coming through and his baby teeth at the top seem to have worn down to nothing. Wondering when we worry about the teeth not appearing at all then?

One of mine had this...well, most of my kids have had something weird with teeth. They slowly moved and the baby teeth fell out or were encouraged by the dentist and then moved into place. We obviously aren't the experts so if the dentist says it's okay, it is. One of my children had their front upper teeth come through as points which looked like fangs for a long time. Eventually they then rotated 90degrees into position and you'd never kny!

Townie22 · 13/04/2022 17:37

You can see here how worn down they look, they used to be much longer.

My 8 year old had the same with his two bottom teeth but they did move forward when the baby teeth eventually fell out. He hasn’t lost anymore and the dentist said he has known children not to lose their top front teeth til age 10 so not to worry.

MillyMollyMardy · 13/04/2022 18:35

His bottom tooth is fine and is likely to get pushed forward by his tongue, but why haven't the front top one's come through?
I'd recommend asking how delayed your dentist normally allow before looking for reasons such as an extra tooth. An xray will quickly show if there is anything stopping them. As a rule those central one's are through by 8 and it's the lower lateral incisors coming through that means they're delayed.

FragileLikeABomb · 13/04/2022 18:41

They’re called “shark teeth” my daughter had these and then when her baby teeth came out, they moved into the right place.

Cocodreams · 13/04/2022 21:45

It’s called shark teeth and it’s quite common.

DS had this last year and the tooth will help to dislodge the baby tooth in front, and once that’s out it will slowly move forward to occupy that space.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 13/04/2022 22:17

Ds now 18 was just like this, as mentioned it’s called shark teeth. It took about 6 months for the baby teeth to fall about and then the natural position of the tongue pushed the others into position against the bottom lip over the next few months

12 years on and no braces his teeth are perfect, try not to worry it’s quite common

TattiePants · 13/04/2022 22:30

Both of my DCs frequently had shark teeth. It only becomes an issue when the baby tooth shows absolutely no sign of moving. DD is 11 and one of her top adult teeth has come in in front of the baby tooth and the baby tooth is stuck solid. We saw the dentist in January and she asked DD to try to wiggle it every day and she’d review it after 3 months. We’re due back at the end of the month and the tooth won’t budge so I think it’s getting removed.
