Cold sore sufferers - I tried the heat thing and it works!!

So on the back of a recommendation on here a while ago, I tried the heating up thing that you put on your lip when you get a cold sore. I’ve done it with three cold sores now at first tingle and it’s stopped them all developing into a huge one. Combined with cream. It’s called the HerpoTherm Heat Treatment. It’s a bit ouchy when you do it but definitely worth it. I know it doesn’t work for everyone but thought I’d put it out there in case anyone wants to try. Costs about £25-£30.

I take lysine daily also, subscribe to it on Amazon. I haven't had an outbreak since starting and I have been quite stressed which always causes a flare up. Game changer!!!

That's really encouraging, Dh has only been taking it for a couple of months.

It's currently on an Amazon Lightning deal for £19.99. I've bought one as I'm willing to try anything!

I currently use a Virulite which was worth the money. However, they're no longer for sale on Amazon and are £££ everywhere else.

Thanks, OP. I will look into this. I take lysine and that helps keep it at bay, but also have to wear strong sunscreen as they are activated by the sun. It is a horrible virus and of course we should try to stop the spread as much as we can. I suspect it is related to my decade-long chronic fatigue syndrome and there is research out there exploring the link.

Acyclovir doesn't work for me either. I've resorted to TCP on a cotton bud. Dries them out and then they start to go much quicker. If you get it at tingle stage it stops a full blown one appearing. Stings tho 😂

Getoffmyshoes · 13/04/2022 13:42

Herpotherm is an absolute game changer, it stops them even blistering and keeps it as a small lump under the skin, it can be gone in three days I’ve found if I catch it at first tingle, it’s been WELL worth the money for me (although the battery does drain quickly).

IMO it’s miles more effective then the creams/tablets/patches I’ve tried.

I can't believe in two decades on here, I've not seen all this anti cold sore sentiment. I've searched and all I can find is good advice, lots and lots of reassurance that they're normal and plenty of people confirming the advice re babies and cold sores. The odd wanky comment of course but that's true of every subject. Overwhelmingly, posts seem supportive. I assume the hysteria, ignorance and overt shunning is deleted as outwith talk guidelines?

LittleSnakes · 13/04/2022 15:49

That’s what I found @Getoffmyshoes. Just turns to a small lump under skin. But tiny enough to not be visible. I’ve not found the battery to drain too quickly. Haven’t had to change it yet and I bought it in September.

Hi all helpful folks, can I ask if any of these ideas are safe for little kids? My DS who is 4yo gets them when run down, big blistery ones that make him self-conscious. My pharmacist advised against acyclovir, for reasons that I didn't fully understand but had baby brain so just nodded and left it.

Quick google says herpotherm is safe for kids but that they might find it painful - can anyone comment?

Thanks in advance! And solidarity with all the cold-sore sufferers :)

LittleSnakes · 13/04/2022 16:08

Hey, woolly. I wouldn’t recommend the herpotherm for kids coz it’s quite painful. I mean it’s not that bad as an adult but a kid might be reluctant to use it. The little disc that heats up is tiny, a few mm across so it’s very concentrated in one spot.

Thanks @LittleSnakes. Good to know! Have you ever tried the lysine supplements? Seems like they are suitable for kids as long as not taken long-term, just when a break-out is on the cards?

If anyone else has a cold-sore-prone little one and has used anything that helps, I'm all ears :)

LittleSnakes · 14/04/2022 10:28

I’ve never tried lysine but it sounds good.

blistex relief cream always worked for me at first tingle. I was gutted when it wasn't in the shops then very happy when it came back!
regular cold sore creams never seem to work.
