Been prescribed Diazepam before medical procedure

But I’m really scared of taking medications. I’ve always been anxious about it ever since I was a kid. Even paracetamol. I’ve been given a 5mg dose. Im almost more anxious about taking it than I am about the procedure.
Anyone know how it will affect you at that dose? I have a very low BMI so I think that adds to the stress. In case I absorb it more or something.

Did you get to speak the Dr or anesthetist that prescribed the diazepam as a pre med? Its normally to reduce anxiety, but did you mention that this is actually having the opposite affect? You may be aware, that diazepam would normally make you feel drowsy and more relaxed before a procedure. The sleepiness can last a long time due to diazepams half life, so depending on the surgery you are having and how long surgery would be- whether you'd still be drowsy post op?

Sorry, should have said that adult medication is measured on a weight of a minimum of 50kg. Are you heavier than that?

GeneLovesJezebel · 12/04/2022 21:47

I’ve known it given before MRI’s.

And they attempted the procedure (a breast biopsy you have to have whilst being mammogrammed) without extra medication but I didn’t tolerate it well and so need it repeating. That’s why I now have the diazepam. I just need to get myself to take it tomorrow morning

My daughter was prescribed diazepam for a little while as a muscle relaxant. She was very sleepy and chilled out whilst on it. Almost zombie like at times but she didn’t report any negative feelings, she was just pretty out of it. She was on it for several weeks though not as a one off before an op. I stopped it as soon as I could though as she was struggling with her physio whilst on it and as she was so relaxed she didn’t have the drive needed to help herself recover.

I'm not medical so can't comment on the suitability of the 5 mg dose for your body weight. However, I have very occasionally used diazepam for panic attacks and I find that for me, 2.5 mg (half a 5 mg tablet) is enough to take the edge off. (I'm around 60kg, so 20kg heavier than you.) So you could try starting with half a tablet if you find that isn't quite as daunting. In my experience the effect of that dose is subtle, nothing that you will find overwhelming. Good luck :)

I wouldn't worry. I was given 5mg before an operation on my eyes. I don't think it had any effect on me at all. Didn't make me drowsy or calm my nerves. I would've taken more if they had offered it.

2DogsOnMySofa · 12/04/2022 22:22

I take it now and again for anxiety, it just chills me out a bit, but I can still function, do my job etc whilst taking it. Tbh I've taken anti histamines that have felt stronger

Waterfallgirl · 12/04/2022 22:31

I had some before a dental procedure. I think it did calm me but I wasn’t woozy or ‘out of it’ in any way. Much higher bmi than you though!

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/04/2022 22:33

That’s a low dose I usually have ten and my bmi is 23.

namechangeranonymouse · 12/04/2022 22:36

It's a tiny dose, and your weight in this respect isn't an issue. Don't worry, just take the medication it will help with the biopsy.

FawnFrenchieMum · 12/04/2022 22:41

That dose does sound low though, my dd was on 5mg every 8 hours I think. She was 9 at the time.

catfunk · 13/04/2022 06:55

I love diazepam!
It's a tiny dose, you'll be fine.
