Anyone used Park and Ride for a visit to York?

We are about 1h20 North of York and the train tickets are insane so I'm considering driving. We've only driven before if staying in a hotel (so parking included).

Anyone used Park and Rides into/out of York City centre? How much do they cost / what's the journey length?

Generally a very good service, there are quite a few sites though so check the website for which one is most suitable for where you are coming from and their opening hours as they differ. It is £3.50 return per adult and up to three children free.

Southlandssue · 12/04/2022 17:38

Should have said journeys are usually reasonably quick as they have bus lanes in busy places, maybe 15 mins max.

We live on the outskirts of Leeds and p&r whenever we go to York. No problems, ever. Completely recommend.

Stompythedinosaur · 12/04/2022 18:08

York park and ride is easy and quick.

Baconbutties · 12/04/2022 18:17

We usually park in York city centre eg marygate it can be cheaper than paying for park and ride if there are a few of you and the bus can get stuck in traffic also . Sometimes we have parked in designer village and got the bus in which means you get to see both places if you are shopping. It depends how long you are staying for . If you are going for a long day id park at designer village and get the bus in it’s about 20 minute journey

Yes it's good

That's certainly cheaper than parking

I live in York - parking can be expensive. The P&R seem very good.

Driving in York can be busy - and the ring road is very busy so might as well take the bus.

Oh I didn't realise the outlet was South of the city. Doesn't make sense for us to drive the additional around the city to bus north again.

Just been to york and we used Your parking space where you pre-book parking. This can be private land like private drives or car parks etc or even hotels selling parking to anyone
We used Morrisons car park who sell spaces and all day car park for under £5 and was a 10-12 mins walk to city centre, much easier than parking in centre and much cheaper.
Look for Foss islands rd and Asda and sainsburys sell spaces as well.
The signage wasn't brilliant at Morrisons but you just park anywhere at back of store. Sometimes there are allocated spaces but not at Morrisons Foss islands.
Honestly your parking space saves so much stress of trying to find a space and you know how much it will be beforehand

Which road are you coming down from?

A1? A19?

You want to avoid the ring road as it can be busy. Luckily - in a remarkable act of planning which us unusual for York Council, there are P&R at most major junctions of the ring road.

Byeckythump · 12/04/2022 18:37

P&R is good. Several options depending on which direction you're coming from. Busses go about every 10-15 minutes.

Poppleton Bar is currently closed (covid testing site).

I live in York and parking in town for a whole day is very expensive. You can park at Sainsburys for two hours as long as you spend a tenner which is good for just popping in but obviously not long enough if you're doing a touristy day trip.

Brogues · 12/04/2022 18:38

We use Rawcliffe bar on the north side. Really easy and frequent buses. Stops at the railway museum and just outside the gardens (this is where most get off) so you only have to cross the road to the Minster or shops.

PlugUgly1980 · 12/04/2022 19:52

I use Monks Cross P&R daily as I work in the city centre. Loads of parking spaces, frequent service. As someone else said just avoid Poppelton P&R as it's still being used for Covid testing.
