Boring, but talk to me about this as a packed lunch for a five year old?

The five year old is going off on a sport holiday club today. They're asked to bring two sets of snacks and a lunch (but will be home before tea time).

Packed lunch was:

  • cheese sandwiches
  • two cheese straws
  • three snack packs of raisins
  • two mini chocolate eggs
  • two bottles of 250ml ribena
  • two packs of hula hoops.

What do you think?

I think you're being intentionally goady.

whosaidtha · 12/04/2022 08:19

What do we think in what way?
Sounds like a lot and it's not very healthy. I'm not one for fancy stuff but even I think 2 packs of crisps and ribena instead of water is bad. Not to mention the lack of fruit.

Tanaqui · 12/04/2022 08:19

As a one off with friends who might have similar it'll be fine, as an every day of the holiday thing it is crap!

I'd add some fruit and chopped vegetables, cucumber, peppers, carrot sticks, etc.

StrangeCondition · 12/04/2022 08:20

I think what a load of junk personally

I agree.

What is your relationship to this kid, OP? And why is their packed lunch of relevance to you?

ConkerBonkers · 12/04/2022 08:23

Sounds alright if that's what they eat but if you could find a way to ditch all those crisps and ribena, that would be better.

Thestagshead · 12/04/2022 08:23

Are you judging someone and want folks to join in?

SarahAndQuack · 12/04/2022 08:23

No, I'm not, but I am trying to be neutral so not saying who packed it/what my view is.

Just 5he lunch or the snacks too? Its a lot...

SarahAndQuack · 12/04/2022 08:24

@Thestagshead

Are you judging someone and want folks to join in?
No, but there is a disagreement (ongoing) about quantities/types of food at home.

It wouldn't be every day; holiday club is just one day.

What a strange combination. Is this a kid who'll only eat beige food?

TabithaHazel · 12/04/2022 08:25

If it's just a kind of 'treat' lunch as it's a one off event then I think it's fine and enough if that's what you are asking. My 5 year old is going to camp today too and I've packed:

A cheese and ketchup sandwich
banana
yoghurt pouch
mini cheddars
pepperoni
soreen bar
a few jelly beans

Not a particularly healthy lunch, but not an every day one and I'll do a healthy dinner tonight.

SarahAndQuack · 12/04/2022 08:25

One of two cohabiting parents. We both make packed lunches on occasion, though neither of us do it as a regular thing.

OP posts:
SarahAndQuack · 12/04/2022 08:26

@TabithaHazel, your post reminds me there was a yoghurt squeezy thing in there too.

I would say we usually do pretty healthy dinners. Probably mixed roast veg and lamb kebabs tonight.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 12/04/2022 08:26

I'd take out 2 packs of rasins and a packet of hula hoops and replace with fruit, veg or a boiled egg.

stuntbubbles · 12/04/2022 08:26

I’d add a mini Haribo, some homemade cake and a bun.

Thestagshead · 12/04/2022 08:26

So your partner and the child’s father or mother made this packed lunch and you want folks to say it’s bad?

Oldtiredfedup · 12/04/2022 08:26

Remove 2 of the packs of raisins and 1 pack of hooks hoops and add fruit and veg. Remove cheese from sandwiches and replace with hummus and grated carrot/ham and tomato/chicken salad.

FrecklesMalone · 12/04/2022 08:27

That whoever made it has no idea how to feed a child healthily and will turn around in a few years and talk about "puppy fat" on their overweight child.

KatyN · 12/04/2022 08:27

My 6 year old has half of that (water I sutras if ribena) for her school packed lunch. (She also had a hunk of cucumber and a fruit snack from school)

My issue would be the boring of two snap meals! I’d give pizza as one meal instead.

SarahAndQuack · 12/04/2022 08:29

@Thestagshead

No, I want folks to say what they think of it. Quantity especially.

I have looked up guideline portions for her age, but I am finding it hard to figure out what most people do as she's an only child, and with covid, neither of us has had much exposure to what other people do.

She is quite small and slim for her age and always has been; to me she seems healthy and happy in herself.

Would you expect a packed lunch to be mostly eaten, or would you err on the side of extras in case?

OP posts:
Lifesonebigparty · 12/04/2022 08:29

It's not the best to be honest.

I make packed lunches daily for school. They consist of,

A cheese or ham sandwich or wrap.
Packet of crisps.
Two types of fruit (or veg)
Yogurt and a bottle of water.
Sometimes but not often I add in a kitkat bar. My child is also 5.

Remmy123 · 12/04/2022 08:29

It sounds very unhealthy to me
