Sickness during pregnancy - was yours only in the mornings.

I have come across a group on Instagram with the aim to change the term 'morning sickness' to 'pregnancy sickness'. It really resonates with me as I had pregnancy sickness 24/7 for the first 13/14 weeks of both my pregnancies. I could not physically even get to work on the train so I was signed of.
I always remember the conversation when I returned to work with my manager. He simply stated to confirm so you have been off due to morning sickness. I remember getting quite defensive explaining how sick I was and how it was not limited to any portion of the day. He was face abit Confused and he said well that's just what it's called.

Anyway ever since then having spoken to many women who have had pregnancy sickness not a single one has ever said it was only in the morning. It makes me wonder where the term even came from. I just wondered for those who suffered from sickness was yours limited to certain parts of the day?

I totally agree, I think the term is very minimising I was sick 24/7

Roselilly36 · 11/04/2022 18:26

I was ok in the morning, but sick in the evening.

pointythings · 11/04/2022 18:30

The only time I wasn't sick was when I was asleep.

It wasn't just the first trimester either, it lasted into the 21st week both times - and I didn't have it bad compared to my friend who had proper HG.

The term morning sickness trivialises a lot of women who go through hell. I'd have confessed to anything, done anything to make it stop.

I was also sick 24/7 and signed off work for 10 weeks. This was 20 years ago - the GP said she would put HG on my certificate as no-one knew what that was! I think probably more people are now aware with the likes of Kate Middleton making the condition more public. However, I do think that unless you have experienced it, you are unlikely to understand quite how debilitating it is.

TulipsGarden · 11/04/2022 18:33

No, worse in the evening although I felt sick all the time. And it lasted until 20 weeks, and came back at the end.

ChairOfInvisibleStudies · 11/04/2022 18:34

I even woke up in the middle of the night to be sick when it was at its worst. I insist on referring to it as morning-day-and-night sickness!

No. 24/7 until my 22 week. I was hospitalised at one point

Padderbadger · 11/04/2022 18:39

Mine was all day but it got a lot worse at night. I could barely sleep

MadameHeisenberg · 11/04/2022 18:40

I had it 24/7 until I gave birth. I missed so much time, I lost my job. Lowest point of my life, both times.

DramaAlpaca · 11/04/2022 18:42

I felt severely nauseous all day in my three pregnancies but was more likely to actually throw up in the evenings, unless something triggered me during the day. It went on until about 20 weeks each time. It was horrible.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 11/04/2022 18:55

I had HG. Vomited 5-16 times a day for 8 months. Nausea constantly between each hurl . Any time of day and night. Relentless. Unable to work or leave the house except for hospital and midwife appointments. Tongue and gums bled. Truly horrific.

Piper22 · 11/04/2022 18:57

Definitely. I think morning sickness is actually quite patronising. My sickness was mostly in the evenings to begin with but then extended to being around the clock

CurbsideProphet · 11/04/2022 19:17

I'm 13 weeks tomorrow and have been signed off work for the past 6 weeks. I feel sick every second I'm awake. I can be sick any time day and night. I would find it easier if I was just sick in the morning. Like a previous poster I've woken up middle of the night to be sick. I'm also finding it difficult to swallow liquids which is weird.

romdowa · 11/04/2022 19:23

I gave my self whip lash from vomiting and heaving so much in the first trimester. It was absolutely horrendous and definitely not just a morning thing

ALongHardWinter · 11/04/2022 19:24

I was sick all day, every day from 2 days before I found out I was pregnant (4 weeks) until I hit 13 weeks. Then it stopped, literally overnight.

SecondhandTable · 11/04/2022 19:39

Have a look at the Pregnancy Sickness Support charity OP. They do a lot of awareness raising about this. I had two HG pregnancies, I was severely ill with sickness despite taking antisickness meds. Both times I was off work for about 3 months and the sickness didn't go until about week 26/28ish. I was even briefly hospitalised with my first.
